Default Fun Team Game

Posted By: warshawlaw

I was wasting more time at work procrastinating when I came up with a fun variation on the nicknames team game. This time, the nickname has to be totally separate from the player's real name (not a diminutive or alternative, e.g., no Hank or Sandy or Jimmy) AND has to appear on a baseball card AND you have to ID the issue where it appears AND the nickname has to replace the player's given name on the card front (so no Willie "Puddin' Head" Jones cards). Here goes:

C: Yogi Berra (1954 Topps)
1B: Whitey Lockman (1947-66 Exhibit)
2B: Cookie Rojas (1971 Topps)
SS: Pee Wee Reese (1956 Topps)
3B: Pie Traynor (1928 Exhibit)
RF: Babe Ruth (1926-29 PC Back Exhibit)
CF: Duke Snider (1954 Topps)
LF: Lefty O'Doul (1926-29 PC Back Exhibit)
P: Cy Young (T206)
P: Whitey Ford (1961 Topps)
P: Spud Chandler (1947-66 Exhibit)
RP: Sparky Lyle (1969 Topps)
Manager: Casey Stengel (1965 Topps)

How about the most famous nickname ever....

1948 Leaf (or should we say 1949) - and probably several much earlier...

Honus Wagner - AKA John Peter Wagner

"Honus" is a derivation of "Johannes". It would be interesting to see what was actually on Wagner's birth certificate.
