I'm new to this site, so I apologize if I don't do this properly. What do you guys think of this listing? Seller's got perfect feedback (though he hasn't sold a lot of items). And the card is guaranteed (for what that's worth). Guess he could have made a lot of smaller sales to set up a big scam. He also listed nice Mantle and Mays cards from 1952 and had buy it nows for under book (assuming they grade well). If they're such great cards and authentic, certainly seems strange he wouldn't get them graded himself. Any thoughts?

I have no opinion as to whether this card is legit or not, but I am always leery of any seller that is fully aware of grading companies and the amount ofmoney to be made if it's slabbed, but yet doesn't bother to get it slabbed. The cost of a PSA membership is nothing compared to the amount of extra money this would bring if the cards were slabbed an 8. It's makes no sense at all to leave that kind of money on the table when you know about it. My guess would be that the card is trimmed or bleached or has some other problem and that is why it's not being submitted.

although I would add that it may be a reprint (such exist but I'm no authority) or it may have been submitted and rejected.
The money left on the table by not having it graded is waaaaaaaay too much and thus seller's conduct makes no sense, IMO.

As a potential buyer, you have to ask yourself the simple question "Why would a seller sell a card that he is claiming is worth $30,000 for $4,000." I don't know anyone who would toss away the good chance at $24,000. Do you?

it doesn't matter what the card is or what it would actually grade, because you shouldn't sent someone like this $4,000. $4? $14.44? Go ahead, take your chances.

I don't know about anyone else, but it would have to be someone I know really, really well that I send a $4,000 cashier's check to. Not someone who all I know is he gained 20 positives by buying gift cards and beanie babies.

So, with these types of auctions, it's a moot point whether or not the items is authentic, because I won't bid.

Why are you asking this question after you bought it for $4000?
A better time to ask is before you hit the buy it now tab.

If you know anything about cards you can tell this guy is a total idiot. Listen to the stupid story he/she tells. "If I only had time blah blah blah"....It lists for $30000 graded but I'm an idiot so here it is for $4000. OK....heres the deal to ANYONE on the board. I will give you $4000 and you give me a $30000 card. Deal? The other line kills me too... "I just don't have time to send it to be graded but after the SECOND time on ebay I will think about some other scam"......late

I've emailed this person before to ask for a phone number to contact them in regards to a card he or she had listed. They told me to give them MY number and which i did, but when they called they blocked the number. go figure.

I give the Leon the award for quote of the month, which puts the auction in perfect perspective.

"...heres the deal to ANYONE on the board. I will give you $4000 and you give me a $30000 card. Deal?"

As far as my collecting budget goes, $4,000 is a little steep. So I will give $100 for all $1,500 cards and $300 for all $5,000 cards.

It may be the scan but the colors on the Matthews card look "off." Not a '52 expert but I've seen a few Matthews' and the colors look wrong.

I was tempted to purchase this card but after comparing it with other examples of the 1952 Topps Eddie Mathews, I felt it was slightly undersized and possibly trimmed. At any rate, there were far too many red flags and I decided to pass.

After further inspection of the particular auction, and the past ones from the seller, it probably isn't a scam.. They do give a money back guarantee as to it grading from PSA (not my fave but still the top grading company by volume). The "me" says they are a husband and wife team in their 60's and they are honest. Almost always in life if it seems to good to be true it probably is. At best the card does look short, from the scan. Good luck to whomever bought it maybe it will turn out great. Stranger things have happened. regards

Leon,

I agree with you. I didn't have a problem with the seller on this one -- my problem was with the appearance of the card and the fact that other less valuable cards from the same seller were graded.

Maybe too short. I wouldn't buy it graded or raw; I don't want a Matthews rookie that much...Yes, since he/she grades everything else--how does Matthews escape? Makes no sense at all.

not getting the card graded and losing thousands of dollars due to this
'decision' is a red flag, period!
i've had all my cards graded for safekeeping as well as proper valuation
and proper evaluation and have nothing nearly 'so valuable'.
davidcycleback and many others speak the truth!

best

All thieves leave fingerprints. Go to Yahoo auctions, advanced search on user ID card_dove
you will see that user is a thief. then look at the style of the closed auction and compare to the matthews. The writing, colors etc. Also, why does Redraven! have only Mays, Mantle & Matthews in 52'. Where's Bob Feller, Yogi Berra and maybe some lessers? Only the premier 3? There are so few mint 52's still ungraded how do these specific 3 all show up with 1 user?

I was the original poster on this thread. Just wanted to thank everyone for their input. I was dumb enough to hit the Buy it Now on that Mathews "card," but not dumb enough to send any money before checking it out. When I confronted the guy about the legitimacy of the auction, he never responded. Big surprise there, huh? By the way, on Yahoo auctions (Thanks to Card Avenger for pointing that out), looks like this scammer has struck again. Someone's out $5700 for a bogus 1951 Bowman set. Sounds like from the negative feedback, the buyer's going to go after the guy. I hope so.

Anyway, I posted initially just to get some help on the auction problem. But I think I'll be sticking around. I've been reading the other threads and they're fascinating -- the occasional snide comment aside. I don't own any pre-WW II cards. Used to. I had a 1921 E121 American Caramel Ruth graded 4 by PSA, plus a few T206's. Unfortunately, had to sell them because my wife and I are in the process of buying a house and we needed money for a down payment. It was painful to part with them, but have a 1 1/2-year-old and priorities change. Once we get settled in the house and on our feet financially, I hope to start collecting again. And I'll definitely use this forum as a resource.

So thanks again. You helped save me a bundle.

I'd rather rent, wear old clothes, drive a junker and eat ramen for lunch every day than sell cards for silly stuff like food, clothing and shelter

The key is not to let her know what you have or what they are worth.

i've learned my lesson the hard way (only $850) that you only have yourself to blame if you're buying ungraded cards from an "unknown" seller...

The sellers rating is a 90.2 although private because he does not want you to know that he is a liar and a scammer.

Hey guys,

I hate to say it, but I always follow the rule of thumb that if it looks
too good to be true, it generally is. This card is most definitely a reprint,
and you can tell by the color hues on the back of the cards. In fact, the front
looks kind of pixelated, especially the team logo.

I actually have a real Mathews 52 that I've been thinking about selling (for a lot cheaper
than this one!!). Given it isn't in the best of shape, but I am just looking to recoupe
my costs on this one. Cubguy, or anyone else: If you're interested, let me know; I'd be happy to
send along scans at whatever resolution and magnification you'd like!

My email: dyoken@fastmail.fm

All best,
Dave
