Old Judge King Kelly Boston Portrait

I recently picked up a N172 Old Judge $10,000 Kelly Portrait, Bare Head with a Boston Jersey. It is in real nice shape & I cannot seem to locate this pose in the 2005 SCD. I understand the Boston version is more valuable can anyone help?

Wow... I have never seen or heard of an N172 King Kelly BOSTON portrait card... only him standing with his bat or fielding!!

PLEASE post a scan of the card...

and you may have the only one known to exist!!!

The Chicago N172 Kelly "portrait" card pictured above is listed in the SCD as being worth TWICE AS MUCH as all of the "Boston" varieties...

but that would be completely irrelevant if you have a UNIQUE "Boston" variety that has never been seen! I think it would be worth AT LEAST as much as my Chicago portrait and maybe more!

ALSO ... if you are LUCKY enough that your card is a "PLAYERS LEAGUE" card instead of a "National League" card...

then it will REALLY be worth a mint!!!!

Does your card say "Boston, N.L." or "Boston, P.L." under the photo ??

If you check the gfg site on the Oregon find youll see a Boston portrait version of Kelly with no hat as Bob pointed out.Its probably the same version he has.

because David has a number to correspond with the Old Judge checklist im going to assume it is a known card just based on the fact he found cards that didnt match up to any listing and he labeled them 123-XX(just an example number) or 123-aX if the pose matched another but not the variation

There are three different Kelly portraits, two with Chicago on the jersey, one with Boston. My experience tells me that they are equally common. Obviously, they are all listed.

The Boston-uniform bare-head portrait card of Kelly has long been recogniez and was cataloged in the "by poses" listings of N172 last time we published that list. When the Hall of Famers were broken out for a separate listing in the 2005 book, the Boston card was overlooked. It will be returned to the Hall of Fame listings in the 2006 edition.

Terry Knouse and other knowledgeable collectors have told me the Boston one is much tougher. Thanks for all of the valuable input, and so quickly. I remain in awe of the combined talent and resources of this board!

catalogued and known, is rarer than the other two, the beautiful one and the cross-eyed one. I never saw a Boston portrait till half a year ago. You won't find that portrait with "Chicago" on it.


I know, it's higher up in this thread. I never get tired of it, though...
