I was curious if there were any serious T205 collectors out there. People always talk about the T206 set but I have always liked the T205 set better. Although the T205 set is missing some players that are in the T206 set I just love the design and the color

Not sure what your definition is of "serious" T-205 collector but I'm about 10 cards shy of a complete set (including variations) so that probably qualifies..

I'm sure there are plenty who frequent the board who have similiarly near-complete or complete sets and are avid T205 collectors.

Thats not to say that I haven't collected T206 as well but I agree with you that T205s are one of the nicest (and often overlooked) sets out there.

I agree whole-heartedly. It's a great set to put together. I also like that the backs have info on them. My favorite is he "tenanted" the bases..... It's also a set much more in reach of completion for the serious collector who has only average means. My set's been done for over 30 years, and it's still my favorite.

I have the set plus variations (minus Hobby no stats) and continually add nice duplicates to tuck away for future selling when collectors finally realize just how nice it really is. I wouldn't say it is too underappreciated, though, the T207 set takes top honors there...

IMHO
The T205 set is the more attractive, colorful and informative of the T sets.
The etchings of the players are almost photographic, and they are beautiful.

The gold borders although tough to find without specks that is unless you are lucky, gives it that majestic look.

The beautiful baseball vintage scenario etched into the background of the American League teams, is like if they knew back then that there would be future fans interested in the games evolution.

As for the National League counterpart cards, they gave us a facsimile of the players autograph.

The short list of minor leaguers speak for themselves.

Even the backs are not only a collection of various brands. but also informative and attractive.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I like this set.

The t205 is a great set for all collectors, new and ventern. It's not overly large, the cards are common enough that it is not immpossible to finnish and has just enough rarities to make the set a challenge.

I think some of the color combos chosen for their cards are among the best graphically of all early 20th century cards. My favorite is Jack Barry's card. I like most of the AL cards too, esp. White Sox. Oddly, I do not find the Cobb to be particularly attractive. Too green, I guess, and doesn't really look like him.

Not so wild about the NL cards; too impressionistic. I do like McGraw and Marquard's cards. Not so wild about Matty, either; has a mug shot quality to it.

It is a nice set, but I prefer the T206 poses for the most part. The bust-style portraits look better than the mug shots.

Putting it together now and just picked up the Joss, Turner,Klienow and Wallace no cap all psa graded 3's or better....whew like that 4 group ...can be fairly tough!

21 cycle backs all different players and having fun while being patient to complete the set.

also , maybe soon selling on ebay, look for a nice mixture of graded tobacco's and caramels from one who is very particular about size and having the cards look right as well. Borders mean an awful lot and I enjoy every card that I own. My goals for collecting are completing the t205set and getting alot more Ramly's.

Well I'd rather have others deal in the limelight , you'll see the consistency and expierience that I have learned in the 18 yrs of collecting pre-war. I would never sell any card that I wouldn't keep for myself. At one time , I may have owned the nicest group of Mello mints w/37 no center creases and many exmt+ along w/ more high quality e94's at one time, unless Halper's collection merited better.

Did most of your Mellow Mints come from the big find in the late 80s. I seem to remember Macrae aquired that group as I got a really nice Lajoie and Young from him from that find.

You're not alone, Chris. The Golden Ones are my favorite set and I've been collecting them for about 13 years. I just sold my best set in the last Mastro (except for the Hobby no stats and Young). I'm within 2 cards of completing my second set. Have all the backs. About 85% done with my third set. I think I might need professional help. At least I don't DREAM (at night) about them.

I sold my first set for college for my two sons (thanks to all who bid!), and might do the same with my current best set. But they're lots of fun to collect. They have MANY players who rank in the top 50 all time career leaders in pitching and batting. The history of the players in the set is fascinating.

I remember meeting Jerry in a Taco Bell parking lot in Wylie, Texas (just east of Dallas) so he could get the PSA7 T205 Johnson he bought from me through ebay. It was about 10:30 at night and it was a clandestine meeting...something I would have done in my younger days but with a different product I remember when Jerry told me about telling his wife about the beauty and monetary value of the set. It was hard for her to believe a little piece of cardboard could be worth that much. I too think this is one of the most beautiful sets ever produced. Is it just me, or does the Johnson seem a bit narrow? Maybe I'm too big a cynic about high grade cards in PSA holders when one card fills out the space to hold the card and another shows a noticable gap.

Jay, The cards are not the same size. The supposed size for Ramlys is 2" x 2.5". For more percise measurements I convert to mm or 50.8mm x 63.5mm both cards are 63.5mm tall. The Johnson is 50.8mm and the Ferris is 51.2mm wide. The Ferris card is in some sort of a bag or sleve insde the holder that holds the card securely, the Johnson is not and it "floats". The space inside the holder is 53.5mm wide and 64.5mm tall

I LOVE posting with others who can appreciate the love of my (collecting) life. Yes, Leon, that was a memorable moment for me when you showed my some of your type collection. I had never really seen some of those before and it sparked my interest in the really old stuff.

Hal, Leon is correct. I parted with Big Train in Mastros. I love the rich colors in yours. I may have to talk to you about that one........

What I truly enjoy is the large increase in the number of T205 collectors. Far more than just a few years ago.

BTW, after the Mastro sale, my wife told me I can collect anything I want from now on.

I am trying to complete the 205 set as well and need a little more than 9 cards. I usually go for the lower grade cards. would you have any doubles from the set that are in lower conditions that you might be willing to get rid of?

Jerry Hench is a name I am familar with through eBay. He is a great collector of T205- in high end grades. Its seems few can compete with his buying power. His is a "different" kind of collecting, not one that most are able to engage in. I guess I have to content myself with the crumbs that are left on the collecting table.
