No, not the movie..

Thought I would share another piece of my collection that I don't believe is too common.

I'm not a huge baseball guide collector but I did happen across this many years back.

I am told that its missing its cover but I've never seen another to compare it with so who knows...

Just to share a little more about this guide.. my favorite section is a couple of pages describing Bull Durham Tobacco Companies "Hit the Bull" contest which they sponsered across various minor league ball parks.

They put up bull shaped advertising signs and offered
$50.00 to each player who hit a home run off of their sign as well as 5 pounds of their product to any player who hit a home run in one of the parks where the sign was displayed.

The company reports having given out $700.00 to players hitting the bull for the 1909 season which was a decent sum Im sure for the time but I imagine they made out quite nicely with all of the advertising and excitement this must have generated at the ballparks.

Bull Durham from the T206 sets actual name was Louis Rapheal Staub.Ive never read anywhere,where it said how he got his name,just how good a pitcher he was in the minors and apparently he was a pretty good actor after his baseball days were over.Its just a guess but he probably got the nickname from the tobacco that bears the same name,that would only make sense

They were published only in 1910 and 1911, and were offered for a nickel by the Bull Durham tobacco company. Although more difficult to locate than Spaldings, there was one on ebay this week (with a cover) and I see them in major auctions 2-3 times per year. They usually sell for about 2-3 X what Spaldings go for. Very colorful covers and very similar format to the Spalding guides.

Bob Crestohl sells a guide that has these and most of the other t206-era publications listed, but it's old and the prices are out of date - still, a handy item for guide collectors.

Regarding the price on the SCD 3 Durham! Hell, I didn't get that much out of a VG example I sold with a blank back a few years ago! Maybe we are all collecting the wrong cards??? - Don't go after the Cobbs, Jackson, and Matty's - go after the Bull!

I found a site that is selling the guide and it has the original cover that I'm missing...

Are you going to post a tiny, tiny Radbourne flipping the bird for me? I guess--somehow--the scan got very big--i don't understand, because the rest of my Old Judge scans are about twice Old Judge size. Can you ensmallen it?

I have Ken Burnes "Baseball" book and it has a nice team photo in it with him flying the bird, he obviously enjoyed doing it.

from SABR, on page 52, he's doing the same in a photo of the Beaneaters and New York, 1886. Maybe he liked to show off his extraordinarily long fingers! It's so nice how he has his other hand on a teammate's shoulder (who's smiling at the attention)!

This book contains literally hundreds of fine photos of 19th century teams, individual players and a few cards as well, starting with the 1848 daguerreotype of six members of the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York. My edition is about worn out; maybe I can order a new one.
