Default Hockey madness--anyone know much about Joe Malone?

Posted By: Julie Vognar

before his card arrives? I know he's been in ther hockey HOF since 1950, and his nickname's "Phantom,"--but not much else.

Suppose this is a passing phase?

God, I love my C57 Vezina!

Default Hockey madness--anyone know much about Joe Malone?

Posted By: Jeff O

"Many respected observers regard Joe Malone as the greatest all-around scorer who ever laced on a pair of skates. 'He might have been the most prolific scorer of all time if they had played more games in those days' says Frank J. Selke, the former Canadiens' managing director who remembers Malone as a young professional.

The handsome native of Quebec City played his early hockey for teams in Ontario before being signed by the Quebec Bulldogs. His acquisition by the Canadiens for the 1917-18 season was considered a coup of major proportions. A centerman, Malone was the Jean Beliveau of his day.

Malone's most notable achievement was his record-breaking seven goals in a game scored on the night of January 31, 1920, in Quebec City."

From "Fischlers' Hockey Encyclopedia", 1975.

In that 1917-18 season, Malone scored 44 goals in 20 games (he missed two games). Forget about the modern scoring record, nobody else came close to this rate of goal scoring, except for Malone himself with 39 goals in 24 games another year.

P.S. I'm sure none of you expected me to let this thread go by without some sort of comment.
