I can't get rid of this memory.

I took some cards to sell at Davesdougout in Albany, CA, because I wanted lots of money to bid in a Lipset auction (where I won a beautiful N172 Radbourn). We had absolutely no trouble agreeing on prices for cards. A '34 Goudey Geringer changed hands, and several much newer cards. Everything was fine until (he'd asked me particularly for A's and Giants) I gave him a '71 Bobby Bonds. It was perfect. It had been for 17 years. It was worth $6, retail.

So he gets out his jeweler's glass (is that what they call a loupe?), with the built-in light, and spends 5 MINUTES looking at the edges (the '71s have black edges, as I'm sure you all remember). Half way through the process, I told him I'd had the card for 17 years. He laughed. Kept on looking. Finally, he took out $3 and gave it to me. I mean, '34 Goudey Geringers can be trimmed, stretched, bleached, the back relettered-- guess he thought i wasm't smart enough to alter a Goudey, but would stoop to taking a majic marker to a '71 Bobby Bonds.

Anyway, I thought it was funny.

Dear Julie
he knew psa 9's from 1971 sell for 25-30.00 and that bonds would fetch a little bit more. PSA seems to grade all cards with painted borders extremely tough, ie 53 topps and 71 topps. As a dealer in vintage nodders, I have seen majic markers used alot to cover up paint chips and sometimes it's almost impossible to tell. be well brian

25 - 30 each? Try a few multiples more.

Your right, I was looking at psa 8's instead of 9's.
i have a complete set in nm condition and doubt if i sent them all in that i would get many 9's. So Julie if you have anymore perfect 71's let me know.

It never occurred to me that he would have the card graded. $3...

I thought he was looking for signs of tampering. As far as, was it a PSA 8 or 9, I don't know. Cursory examination by me showed no chips or wear.

I think I may have one more that looks that nice. I'll look.

Your right Brian, boy is that easy to say,high grade lajoie t206's do show up alot more than most, but so does marquard and of course cobb in all but the tougher green background. As much as i hate to admit it, I believe alot of the higher grade t206's have been trimmed, not all but a significant amount. I have been buying t206's for 25 years and can count on my hands the times when i came across really sharp cards. One of those occured in 1985 when I bought 33 sharp t206's from an elderly lady at the Metrolina in Charlotte, who said her husband had collected the cards. I sent most of these cards to be graded in 1997, most by sgc, because t206's look better against the dark background, and only received 3 88's and 6 86's. And yes, Brian there was a nice Lajoie Portrait. It's hard to beleive that a card packed in a tobacco pack, almost 92 years ago, could still receive an 8,9,or 10 when it's not easy to get many 9's out of rack packs or cellos from the 70's. be well brian

Brian,the 71-topps in 9 are almost impossible.You can loup one for hours and find not a flaw and it will come back an "8". They are as tough as it gets in grading by any grading company.The cards from this set that pop up in 9 & 10 are commonly the same player as well! There are no known 9's or 10's of many of the playes from higher series.The yaz comes to mind as a card more likely to be found in 9 or 10 much like thew LAJOIE is in the T-206 set.I have never seen more super fine conditioned cards from that set as the "Nap". I have not looked in the PSA pop but am amazed this card is so easily found in high grade.

BcD is right. A "9" 1971 Barry Bonds would sell for AT LEAST $100.

I agree with you on T206s. There are a great many trimmed cards that are currently being advertised in "8" and "9" holders.

I looked through the rest of my'71 Topps, and not one didn't show a bit of white at some corner. Not ONE.

Several nice '72s, '73s, '75s.

I gave up on getting really nice T206s long ago. Ex or ex+ for me. When I look at a PSA 9 T206, encapsulated, I think of lazers, microscopes, and rulers with tiny little increments.

Julie, jeer up it's also tough to find 72's and 73's in psa 9 or better. in fact cards from 76 and 77 don't hold up very well either.

Don't feel bad about ex or ex+ t206's, thats probably how 50-60% of them came out of the pack.
