Default Cobb Red T206 Photo Cabinet (A Type 1?)

Although this is a photo so in wrong section but given the relevance to T206 I thought this would be of interest.

I saw in preview Heritage’s next auction will have some great items including some great photos.

I found it interesting that they received a Type 1 for this cabinet. I guess it is possible they can see under the paper through a corner, but I thought no cabinets can receive a Type 1 letter. Not sure I see a reverse stamp.

An amazing item, so maybe the answer is who cares.

That is a cabinet by Carl Horner. They are, I believe, the only mounted photographs which a Type will be assigned too. This has been PSAs policy since the inception of the Type system.

The handwritten letter behind the photo looks interesting. Looks to be signed by a Cobb descendant.

It is an authentic original photograph. I think they all meet the specs for a Type 1 photo. Here's my Horner (not Cobb):

The current Horner Cobb will probably bring several multiples of the one offered prior as the photo/cabinet is a bit nicer overall and with a very nice family provenance. 1-2 million is not unthinkable.

Ended at $390,400 with BP.

The Mantle 1951 Bowman Tyoe 1 (believed to be 5th known) $451,400. Little lower than estimate and below last one sold publicly which went for over $800k. Either way big numbers.

Default Studios?

The two versions shown appear to have different “company” names inscribed in the lower right of the mount. Are Therese different studios? Did Horner work for both? How did/would they acquire rights to the negative?

It is a later cabinet for Horner after the merger with Jordan. So, produced circa 1910 or later. That is what held the price back in the end.

"UPDATE: Small adjustment made to history of Horner's studio partnership with Jordan."

I'm not sure how even Heritage could have believed this bullshit they used to describe the change in the date from a 1907 rookie-era Cobb to 1910.

Interesting, good point earlier with that change holding price down a little.

Kind of goes back to my initial comment, how is it type 1? It is more than 2 years by very tough math.

ETA: I guess 2 years is approximate, so leaves a little room.

I'm surprised Henry Yee, the foremost expert on type 1's, didn't catch this and signed off on a 1907 date.

Maybe he doesn't have a clue on Horner cabinets...why they would even need or have type 1 cert is beyond me. But I am just the guy that dated the item...

Methinks they should have consulted you before signing off on that date.

Here is my Mordecai Brown Original Horner Photo, used to make his T206 card. No Mount on this one, but pretty cool to see the "artistic license" taken by the T206 Artist, to transform the B&W photo into the card...
