Dots a nice Miller, Leon. Here's Robert "Bob" Groom. Pitcher for the Washington Senators in 1909-1913. 119 wins and 13 saves in 10 MLB seasons. For the St. Louis Browns in 1917, he pitched a no-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader after pitching 2 innings of no-hit relief in the first game. With Koob, only teammates to pitch no-hitters on consecutive days. His best season was 1912 as he went 24-13 with a 2.62 ERA and Washington finished second in the American League. In 1909, his 7-26 record included 15 consecutive losses, during which his 42-110 Senator teammates mustered a total of 19 runs. Walter Johnson's record that year was 12-25.

Great Idea Leon!

Davis played over a thousand games at 1st Base , but not one at catcher......
I know the first basemen's gloves were bigger back then as they are today, but this glove that Harry has on looks puffy like a catcher's glove??? I think this adds to the coolness of this E98!

My favorite cards of Virginia League players are in the 1910 E222 A.W.H. Caramel set. Pat McCauley was a catcher who played sparingly with St. Louis in 1893, with Washington in 1896 and with the NY Highlanders 1909. He appeared in a total of 37 games during his MLB career. His best year by far was with the Senators in 1896, when he appeared in 26 games, had 21 hits which included 3 homers, and batted .250. This same image of McCauley's appears on his T206 card.

Cracker Jacks are early candy cards, and thus are classified as 'E' cards. They also qualify for the 'E' designation as most consider them to be Eye candy.

Rob, that is a gorgeous E145-2 card! One of the many things I don't like about the TPGs is their inconsistency with respect to showing/not showing the ACC references on their labels.

I agree Val, on the ACC numbers but I prefer them to grade our cards correctly. That is a feat in and of itself.

I never get tired of seeing these E221s.

Leon, I, too, prefer that the TPGs grade our cards accurately and consistently, but I consider this to be wishful thinking and/or hoping, because I don't believe the current TPGs are capable of doing this!

But surely, the TPGs are capable of including the ACC references on their labels.

Leon, if I were to win some sort of contest and my prize entitled me to pick any cards from your collection, I would select your amazing E221s!

Val, I generally support your "every thread should include a Walter or a Rice card" extension of Leon's rule (BTW, those two Witmors are fabulous) and if it goes to a vote and I get one you have it. But here we have our peerless moderator, in generous defiance of his own type-collecting tendencies, calling for "common" cards, thereby opening the door for those of without an extensive run of fabulous Walter and Sam cards, to get a word in edgewise. Perhaps not the best place for your new rule. Nome sane.

(I'm kidding keep the Walter and Sam E-cards coming.)

Meanwhile, here's a very common player who also happened to play his entire MLB career in Washington like our HoF hero's (I'm ignoring Sam's final year).

Raymond C. "Ray" Morgan. Second baseman for the Washington Senators in 1911-1918. 630 hits and 88 stolen bases in 8 MLB seasons. His career OBP was .348. His best season was 1913 as he posted a .369 OBP with 19 stolen bases in 565 plate appearances. He has an odd link to Babe Ruth: in 1917, he led off a game by drawing a 4-pitch walk from Boston starter Ruth, who was then ejected from the game by the home plate umpire. Ruth was replaced by Ernie Shore and Morgan was thrown out attempting to steal on Shore's first pitch. Shore then retired the next 26 batters he faced. Shore's "perfect game" was eventually downgraded to a "combined no-hitter" by subsequent revisions in the MLB criteria.

(I assume this means that Ruth was also "credited" with a combined no-hitter, which is kind of unusual if you think about it.)

Patsy may have been a common player, but he brought an energetic enthusiasm to the play that is captured nicely in this image.

Edward P. "Patsy" Gharrity. Catcher with the Washington Senators in 1916-1923 and 1929-1930. 513 hits and 20 home runs in 10 MLB seasons. He also played some first base and outfield. He had a career OBP of .331. His best season was 1921 as posted a .386 OBP with 55 RBIs in 455 plate appearances.

Given how long i have been collecting and going to Nationals, it has taken me too long to get into the E cards and the Caramels in particular. I picked up this great lot at the National (which I thought was great this year, really enjoyed, last one i made it to was Atlantic City), and just think these are awesomely gorgeous cards. They have a slight stain on the back from being in an album i guess, hence the grades and the attractive prices I paid (for me). Now i have a few keys to add! Yikes. Should have bought those in Atlanta in 1991.

Wiltse a cool common nominee.

Scans could have turned out better, but the one great thing about collecting only Washington Senators (unless you've got a collection like Val!) is that its almost nothing but commons.
