On February 15th I hung in there on the Goldin Auction in pursuit of Boston Rustler’s catcher Peaches Graham 1911 T3 card. I have been seeking this card for quite some time, as I collect Boston National Deadball cards, photos etc. As far as I know , and I’m sure someone here will set me straight if mistaken, this is the only Boston Rustler to have single image card in this series. ( I’m not sure if Buck Herzog is in a Giants uniform ,as he did spring training with them in 1910, but he did play for the Doves/Rustlers 1910/1911 and is featured on a T3 with Jordan “At First”)
I also collect NY Giants in T3 and have six of them. As far as the Peaches card, the bidding got “up there” , but was still less than buying it online….when I could find it. So, it arrived today , well packed by Goldin in a huge box and is the first graded T3 I own. Very pleased with it and it will make a great addition to my Boston Nationals display.

Beautiful card. What I always thought was interesting is that the Carrigan card, from the other Boston team, has the exact same fence in the background.

Thanks Mark….that is interesting. Currently , I’m reading a book on the Red Sox and Braves battling for superiority in Boston (see book below). The two teams did play at each others stadiums throughout the years , but at this point the Red Sox were at the Huntington Ave Grounds ( where the 1903 Workd Series was played ) and the Boston Nationals were at the South End Grounds. Soon, in 1914 , Fenway Park was used by the Boston Braves when they won the World Series and after Braves Field was built in 1915, the Red Sox used it for their World Series in 1915 and 1916.
I guess the T3 backgrounds were more recycling of artwork.

+1 on everything on in this thread so far. I only have half a dozen of the T3s... Maybe I'll pick up a few more. I don't mind rounded corners, I actually like a pin hole, that actually indicates someone liked the enough card 114 years ago to display it somewhere. Some wear is fine, for me. Graham looks GREAT!!! Congratulations!

Great looking card Tim….reading the book , esp in the pre WW2 era, I can’t believe how much the teams played at each others ball parks
And absolutely Frank, I’m with you on wear on a card and the rest you said. I’m like that with my Cracker Jacks , T206’s etc. We tend to forget the “tactile history” of the cards, who owned it , what did they do with it, etc. It would be amazing to see photos of what displays folks were doing back then to enjoy the cards and the sport!

Well , I guess I was half wrong or right about there being another single Boston National in the T3 set. I had not forgotten but, I bought this a few weeks back, but as I collect NY Giants as well, I snagged this Fred Tenney for his NY pedigree, BUT forgot that at the bottom ID it said “ TENNY NY and BOSTON NAT’L”. Receiving this card today and looking at the Herzog “ JORDAN AND HERZOG AT FIRST” , which I don’t own….yet…..it is clear that both Tenney and Herzog, even though they were both Boston Rustlers at the time, are clearly in NY Giant’s uniforms.
Tenney was released from the Giants in 1909 and was a player/manager for the Rustlers for 1910 and 1911. We’ve discussed Herzog earlier. So, barring any player coming out of the mist of time in the T3 set, it seems good old Peaches was the only Boston National in the correct uniform. Now this is nothing new , especially in many of the T series cards. But my suspicion , I believe was right. Peaches Graham is the only Boston National in that uniform. The first 4 images are my Tenney card that arrived today, complete with its own “character” ( which I love). It appears someone wrote on it in pencil, the someone, who knows when, attempted to erase the pencil, only to remove the frame color in that spot. I love this card. The other images are not my cards , but help illustrate the discussion above. The black and white portrait is Tenney as a Beaneater from 1894-1907. Really , the “Giants” players are not the same even, Tenney in a white cap with piping, Herzog with a black cap. I wouldn’t have it any other way!
