Default 2025 market . . . any breakout star?

From the ML and other recent auction reports, it seems a lot of cards grinding away . . . up a small amount . . . flat. . . . maybe a little soft . . . not quite back to where it was . . . .

What will be the breakout card of 2025?

Will there be a breakout card that just explodes?

Keep wondering if obscure rookie issue from guys in the 80s aren't ready to have a moment. Just like a lot of old timers stuck in the 60s, there is a generation of guys coming into the money part of their lives now who grew up in the 80s.

Huh?! "Not quite back to where it was..."? Card prices have increased stratospherically over the last 70, 25, 10 and 5 years. What is it you want/expect?

Charlotte Ripken, although that's already pretty high? Chong Modesto Rickey? The major league RCs are all very heavily produced I think.

Not exactly vintage, but I'm ready to cash in on the Billy Wagner graded RCs when he (most likely) makes the HOF. I've been snapping up on the cheap for a decade+.

On the higher end of rarity, I got a couple of 94 Topps Bilingual PSA 8's and a couple raw ones to shift...some other more rare graded variations (Pinnacle Museum Collection, Topps Gold, etc).

Stuff like this helps fund my "real" collection...and takes the sting out of occasionally overbidding/overpaying for things. HOF speculation has been good to me.

It's not guaranteed, though. I snagged a modest amount of graded 86/87 Jim Leyland cards and profits weren't as great as I hoped they would be...in fact it may have ended up being a wash if you factor in inflation's cut of the profit. On the flipside there's big wins like the stash of 1960 Jim Kaat cards that cashed in big time.

Mickey Mantle cards usually make a surge every 5 years. He is due to jump again.

I hope minor league rookies do take off for selfish reasons:

Not back to where it was is probably a comparison of today’s prices to the highs of 2021/2022 for most pieces.

And I’m not sure that Steve was demanding that we get back to those highs. Just an attempt to read the crystal ball about what the future holds.

It’s one of the big themes around here. Where are prices going? Which AH is best? Why are the TPGs scoundrels and blackguards of the most vile type? And what alterations are acceptable, with or without disclosure?
