Have any of you seen these postcards before? I know about the Jays Publishing 5x7 photos, but I've never even heard of a Jays postcard. Are they rare? Or have I just overlooked them all these years?
Here's a link to the Whitey Ford that recently sold on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/306023715617. I bought it and it arrived today. |

I bought a set of 25, which I believe is the complete set, of the Jay's Yankee postcards about 6 years ago. I'll try to dig them up and post them later.

Sounds like maybe they were Yankees only?

Yes, the 25 I have are all Yankees.
I still haven't been able to find them, but when I do, I'll scan and post.

I found my set and scanned all the postcards. While scanning I started to think this is not a legitimate issue, based on the player selection and quality of the postcards.
I made a table of the players in the set. The table includes the number of the player in the set (I have the players listed alphabetically), the years the person played with the Yankees, the years the person was included in Jay's photo sets, and the year of the Jay's photo set the image used in the postcard set is from. Set List.jpg All 12 players included in the 1965 Jay's photo set are included in this set. However, 4 of the players (Boyer, Howard, Kubek, and Richardson) have photos that were used in earlier sets. I thought that was weird. And for the additional 13 players, why weren't people on the current roster used? Was this supposed to be a "Past and Present" type of set? If so, it seems like some better players could have been included. Lastly, it seems like many, if not all, of the photos are poorer quality than the photos used in the original Jay's photo sets. It seems like the photos used in the postcards are copies of the originals. So, I did a search for 1965 Jay Yankee postcards and found that the set is listed on TCDB, https://www.tcdb.com/ViewSet.cfm/sid...kees-Postcards It is listed under unlicensed and as "1965 Jay Publishing reprint New York Yankees Postcards." It had photos of 14 of the players, so I added photos of the other 11. If you want to photos of all the "postcards," you can see them there. I'm not sure that I would list this as a 1965 set because who knows when it was printed. I doubt that it was made by Jay Publishing. And, I doubt it is a "reprint" of anything. It is an unlicensed set made to appear to be a Jay's Publishing Yankee postcard set. Lastly, why is SGC acting like this is a legitimate issue?

Thanks Michael for all of your hard work on this. The use of the word "reprint" on the Trading Card Database is strange. Reprint of what? And why is the word "reprint" just snuck into the middle of the title. You'd think it would be in big bold letters at the beginning or end of the title. I think you're right and it's not a reprint of anything, just an outright forgery meant to be passed off as an original set from 1965. And you've got to wonder what SGC was relying on to authenticate these and to give them a specific 1965 date.
I'm just glad I got outbid on the Mantle, Maris, and Berra that were also on ebay with the Ford. I was the underbidder on all three of thosed, and could easily have been the unlucky "winner" of them all. By the way, these were sold by the PSA Vault. So, they seem to have fooled PSA as well, though there was a disclaimer on the listing that PSA does not guarantee the authenticity of SGC graded cards. |

As to the year, 1965, that makes sense. I've read on Net54 that the owner of Jay's Publishing died in a plane crash in 1965. That's the reason no Jay's sets were made after 1965. And, there are several photos in the postcard set that were only used in the 1965 Jay's Publishing set. Therefore, 1965 is the obvious year to claim the postcards were made.

Hi-
I purchased a set of these from a dealer I know in Massachusetts. He said he bought them in the 1960s at a game (he went to Yankees and Red Sox games) and I believe his story. One of them had tack holes (maybe Berra?) but the rest were nice. I have since sold the set but I figured I would state what I was told about them. I can ask him for more details the next time I see him if that might help. Alan |
