Did anyone win any of the signed album pages from this collection in Hunt’s auction this week?



The fact that the Hal Chase auto sold for $14,000 is remarkable. Most of the other lots were very reasonable, I thought. There were about 75 T206 subjects in the collection, some extraordinarily rare. I came away with 16 of them (not Chase). Would love to know if anyone else landed any?

Two bidders who had no idea what that Chase is realistically worth, with money being no object. Strange. I can't wait for everybody and their brother to try to cite this as some sort of vaulation point for every Chase being offered subsequently. If anybody stumbles upon this thread while doing research on the subject: don't think for a minute that this is an accurate valuation for such a piece. This was a lark, and the consignor should thank their lucky stars.

I felt that several went for more than they were worth, but Chase and Willis took the cake for "huh?" factor.

Eddie Collins ($1150 + 17.5%) & Eddie Cicotte ($800 + 17.5%)? If you don't need the silly slabs or an LOA to tell you something is authentic, they're $375 pieces all day long, and not easy sells at that. Not to mention that nicer examples can be found. Just two of several I could cite. I was in disbelief.

I haven't seen an Eddie Collins autograph for $300 to $400 for a while, where are you getting your prices from?

Some cool stuff. I got Reggie, Kirby and Musial. Also a few lots of 60’s and 70’s HOFers.

The price of the Victor Willis was insane!
Wow, that sold for a lot more then I'm sure anyone expected...

I was essentially on the sidelines as a watcher, but an unbelievable collection of beautiful album pages. I don't believe that we will see another collection like this any time soon. Single signatures, signed big with vintage fountain pen.
IMHO, it doesn't get any better than this!

I was fortunate to buy a Satchel Paige AP from this Brizzolara collection perhaps 5 years ago that I believe is superior to the one offered.

I agree Chase and Collins were high. Chase maybe 10x too high. Collins maybe twice as high as it should have been.

Walsh for $350 was a great deal. There were plenty of other deals as well.

I also agree that this kind of find is extraordinarily rare. If another one ever appears I think it will be quite some time from now.

I had consulted with one of the top known experts who contributes to this forum...you all would know him...first to ask if he had a Hal Chase for sale (he didn't) and then his opinion as to the market value of the one on Hunt. He came back at around $2500. I pulled out at $2000 because I saw where the bidding was going.
$14,000. Wow!
May have to look into more affordable collecting.

Thanks, the lots I bid on (and won) went much lower than I was expecting. The one exception was Jimmy Sheckard, which went for north of $2k. I bowed out around $1,500. Would’ve loved it, but not at that price.

REA and LOTG each had Hal Chase signatures in auctions within the past year. Neither sold for more than $2,000….

The Hunt one was a pretty nice example, but not worth $12k more than these two. $2,500 is a fair market estimate for the one that just sold for $14k.

Not sure if this fits within your timeframe, but I purchased a Collins signed cut from a check with a full JSA letter about 1.5 years ago for $335...and thought I over paid.

3 years ago I got a contract with two of his sigs for 360.

Wow on the Neighbors! For the general big-time collector, is a page or 3x5 more or less desirable than a document like this?

There are more 3x5 or GPC collectors for most items. But, in many cases a document can be more valuable than either given the context. I find it’s generally easier to find a market for the 3x5 or GPC, but some documents will be worth quite a bit more.

I agree with what Paul says, but would like to add that value of 3X5 vs. a document has to be weighed using the determinig factors of which player has signed and the uniqueness/historical value of the document.

Some players are common in document form but much rarer on a 3X5. While the valuations aren't at all staggering, the first player that comes to mind for me is Roy Hutson. His family was sitting on thousands of checks and they were sold many years ago. Even though he died way back in '57, these checks have minimal value due to their abundance. Conversely, try finding a 3X5! That would command more value to all the 3X5 collectors for whom a check would be nothing more than a filler. If you want some HOF examples, think of Barrow and Eddie Collins. For Barrow especially, there are enough checks and documents to encircle the world. 3X5s are much tougher. He was a gracious signer, but it proves that not too many fans had the foresight to write him. I personally feel that 3X5s of those two should command much more of a premium than they do. To an extent, Branch Rickey is another example. More people wrote to Rickey, seemingly, but we see a lot more signed documentation in the marketplace vs. nice 3X5s.

With Neighbors, a 3X5 would be considered extra special due to the fact that he signed very few of them. If there are more than a couple out there, they likely have yet to be discovered. He is more easily found on cuts/album pages. Your Wingler form is certainly more appealing to me than that album page that sold, but I'm a sucker for Wingler and extra writing (which you never see with Neighbors). Other collectors share my passion for these things, so in my estimation, your document should at least be on par with that A/P when it comes to value. Other collectors are more prone to collect things only up to a certain size, so for them, this would qualify as oversized and be of less interest. To people like ourselves, there is historical value to any Wingler form. To outsiders, it's a pretty dry piece. They wouldn't understand. Some collectors may only see extra value in, say, a letter Neighbors sent home from Korea (nonexistent as far as I'm aware).

Also, the price that the Neighbors A/P fetched is assuredly another one without a foothold in reality. I was shocked.

I would rank Neighbors the easiest to procure of the MLB alumni who perished in WWII and Korea, but naturally all are difficult. Of the trio, Neighbors had the "longest" career at a whopping 7 games! It would also be of little-known interest to some is that he was half Cherokee.

That's a pretty serious price on the Quinn. I have Quinn on a WWII team signed baseball. (Actually also have him on a WWII Navy All-Star Game-Used baseball)
