Hi everyone:
Just a quick note to let you all know that LOTG's "late" Summer Premier Auction is open for bidding. It's the biggest auction we've ever done - more than 2100 lots, and some of the coolest stuff we've ever offered. Some highlights: • A bunch of spectacular Type 1 photos, including a beautiful Paul Thompson shot of Babe Ruth dating to 1920. • A spectacular 1917 Tim Murnane Day photo featuring Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Joe Jackson and more, originating from Walter Johnson's estate and with WaJo's handwriting identifying each player (including a ? instead of his name), with a letter of provenance from Net54's own Hank Thomas. • An unbelievable find of T206 printer's scraps and other print anomalies that walked into our office at the beginning of the summer. 20 cards that were part of a group of more than 100 T206s mounted to two cardboard mattes. Missing color passes, ghost images, yellow scraps, dual names, and multi-strike backs, all together in one amazing collection. • The largest 19th Century section we've ever offered. More than 200 lots of cards and memorabilia in total - N172s, N173s, N173 "Proofs", KBats, Yum Yum, G&B Gum, studio cabinets, scorecards (including a gorgeous Mort Rogers) and more. • A gorgeous group of 1959 Home Run Derby cards, in higher grade. • A complete T204 Ramly set, sold card-by-card, including a bunch of beautiful, rare examples. • A huge collection of companion pieces for display purposes, all related to the companies that make the cards we love. Old Judge, Croft's Cocoa, Close Candy, Boston Garter, Pirate, etc. • Probably my favorite piece in the auction, which is a photo album that walked into our booth at the National. When we opened it, we were greeted with a bunch of snapshots that seemed to be from the University of Michigan, but as we paged further in, it had tons of baseball content, including a bunch of shots of Branch Rickey. Later, there were shots of 1913 spring training with the Cleveland Naps, including a never before seen photo of Nap Lajoie with Hal Chase and Vean Gregg. Just an amazing piece of history. There's so much great stuff in this auction, I'm so proud of it. We've still got some work to do, putting the finishing touches on a lot of the memorabilia pieces (there's tons of items that require measurements), and some improvements we're making to some descriptions of group lots and sets. Those will be up in the coming days. Until then, though, we're open for bidding. The auction closes on Saturday the 28th. If you're an active bidder, catalogs will mail late next week - we tried something cool this time, we're printing them with two different covers and mailing them out at random - some of you will get one, some will get the other! You can bid or peruse the auction here, if you're so inclined: https://bid.loveofthegameauctions.com/Lots/Gallery Thanks! -Al |

Al, do you have an image of the T206's before they were removed from the cardboard mattes?

Hi Patrick!
I don't, unfortunately. Each card was stuck to the backing with a single strip of tape, if you look at the back scans you can actually see the place where it was. -Al |

The pins in Lot 156 are NOT Brooklyn Dodger related. They are College basketball related to Brooklyn College. These were discussed on this forum several years ago.

I know you say in the description that you don't think that they came from an original collection but to me it seems likely that they did originate from someone that worked or had access to one of the printing facilities. |

Hi Al,
Nice '74 Laughlin Old-Time Black Stars run you have in the current auction. It includes some highest-graded examples (e.g. PSA 9's of Mendez, Bell, Frank Grant, Charleston, Rube Foster - and in case anyone is wondering, I am NOT the consigner). I couldn't help but notice that the descriptions included for each of these are copied verbatim from my PSA Registry Set. I'm flattered that you think my blurb adds value to your auctions, but I am conflicted (particularly since I am a retired academic) about the lack of attribution. Perhaps the parenthetic inclusion of "Description from Paleocards' 1974 Laughlin Old-Time Black Stars set, #1 on the PSA Set Registry from 2012-2023," or something to that effect, would have been appropriate. Thanks, Andy Kramer (paleocards) |

Hi Andy:
I've got to apologize for that. I did not write those descriptions. That's not acceptable, and not by our standards whatsoever. I will be rewriting them myself shortly and will have new descriptions before the end of the day. Thanks for the heads up, occasionally it's difficult to get every description proofed myself (one of the drawbacks of no longer being a one-man show, perhaps). -Al Last edited by Al C.risafulli; 09-18-2024 at 04:21 PM. |

Any reason why? Did the two different covers cause the delay in shipping the catalogs?

Andrew as long as you are here, is it possible to post a description of the 1973 Shur Fresh Bill Russell strip? Unusual item and to me anyhow not self-explanatory. Thanks.

We did two catalog covers because we're collectors. A lot of magazines are doing alternate covers these days and I think it's a neat idea. I take a lot of pride in our catalog design, and each auction I look for a special kind of image for the cover. This time I think we had two different ones I loved, so I thought it would be a perfect time to do alternate covers. It was fun to do, and I'm sure it's something we'll do again. In terms of a "delay," we always shoot to have catalogs printed and out before the weekend prior to auction closing, which we did. Sometimes we are able to get them out earlier, but there's no delay on catalog mailings. Good luck bidding! -Al |

Hi Jay!
The catalogs go out via Priority Mail from a mailhouse in Schenectady, NY. Printing completed Thursday and the mailhouse finished on Friday. We got our extras last Friday, and our seed copies came Saturday. I received several emails on Monday and yesterday from customers who received their copies. If you still don't have your copy tomorrow, feel free to reach out and I'm happy to FedEx you one. Thanks! -Al Last edited by Al C.risafulli; 09-25-2024 at 12:10 PM. |
