Default Revisiting T207 Napoleon oddity - your input needed

Need some help on a T207 investigation.

In a now almost 10 year old post, Mac Wubben (hi Mac!) identified a curiosity on the back of a T207 Gowdy with the Napoleon back. He coined the term the 'Recruit swoop' where what looks like part of the curve of the last 'T' in Recruit was not completely removed when creating/laying out the Napoleon. Forgive my printing illiteracy ... the images do it more justice.

That post saw limited response, but has stuck with me. Having only seen a couple of other Gowdy's with that back in the last 10 years, I'm asking for some survey help ...

Here are two examples of the T207 Napoleon Gowdy with 'the Recruit swoop',

and here is one Gowdy without it (and does the top right side of the last N look a little odd?)

Would like to get additional inputs to see what the populations might look like:

1) If you have a T207 Gowdy (Napoleon), is it swoop or no-swoop (and post an image if you would).
2) Do you have any other Napoleon that shows this sort of 'apparent overprint'?

Any info and/or images you can add to this thread would be great - would love to hear and see what people have to help pin down this oddity.

Thanks!

Mike,

Crazy stuff, wish I could add something.

My Gowdy isn’t a Nap. (but it is an Anon.3 ), so no help there.

I only have a handful of Naps. and none have the “Recruit Swoop.”

Also, very much YES – The last “N” is definitely “shaved” (for lack of a better term) on right side.

Here is a “normal” Nap. Back. For comparison:

becknap.jpg

So it would make sense (at least to me ) that the “swoop” was printed first. Then the printers realized it, and removed it, causing the “shaved N.”

BUT --- why just Gowdy ?????!!!!! One time / one sheet / first run of Nap. Backs and he was the random front ?? That’s all I can think of ……

All part of the – Fun, fun, Scott

Great thread! I was just going to post what Scott said about the "N" being shaved a bit.
