Has anyone ever had a card rejected for grading or crossover because it was too fragile to holder?

Yes.

If it's something you really need slabbed, CGC will encapsulate almost any condition card. I've had a couple cards come back from SGC as too fragile and sent to CGC to get them at least slabbed so I could sell them more easily.

Yes, I have had it happen at both PSA and SGC. I may try CGC.

Whenever I see someone post an image (on here or Facebook, etc.) that was deemed too fragile to holder, I post this image and question why the graders rejected the other card.

This one actually looks like it won't fall apart if taken out of the slab. Just a ton of wear...

My Evers has deftly avoided slabification so far...as he knows his deteriorating condition would be sealed for all eternity if he went the grading route. As is, he clings to the slender possibility that a cure for his malaise will be discovered.

Answer to question is yes, a T3 Matty, SGC said too fragile. Sent card to PSA and it came back slabbed and Graded a 2. This was at least 10 years ago back when SGC was a 20 minute ride from my house here in NJ. It was explained that when sealing the slab sonic vibration had in the past caused some very fragile cards to crumble. So to be safe they returned my card and my money..

I also had one rejected from Beckett, but it is understandable due to the nature of it. A card I found in a parking lot during a rainstorm that I immediately put into a screwdown and has been there ever since. I wanted to get it slabbed just because but they said they wouldn't do it because it could become further damaged just by taking it out of the current holder.

There really isn't any more to it. Details I guess. It was in 1995 and the card is a 1995-96 Upper Deck Collector's Choice Theoren Fleury base card.
A few years ago I inquired to a Beckett rep when he was at the LCS about it and he said to not bother. Especially because you have to put cards into those semi-rigid holders and then the graders have to take it out. I will try to find it so I can take a photo to show |

This is a good application for an old-school two piece screwdown.

I would think that immediately placing a wet card into a screwdown holder would either potentially invoke the mold gods to do their work, or would at least cause card damage upon trying to remove this card from the holder.

OK I mean when I got home. I was not carrying a screwdown with me at the time.

I have great news: you can buy this for $1.69 with free shipping from Burbank on eBay. But, I’m guessing there’s priceless sentimental value remembering your excitement over 28 years ago. ![]() Last edited by 4815162342; 06-14-2024 at 12:40 PM. |
