Default Are 1911 D304s increasing in value?

Just curious if anyone else has gotten this impression. I bought a non-star in pretty rough shape 2 years ago for around $50. Now it seems like, for any player, they scarcely sell for less than $300. Has this set gotten hot among collectors for reasons that I'm not aware of? (It's a gorgeous set, one of my favorites, but I don't know what would be driving a recent value surge.)

Thank you.

Sure seems like that to me. I have always wanted to collect the set, and willing to do it in low grade, but it is hard to get any good value in these. Just have a few. Definitely seems like at least a handful of collectors are chasing the set. I did luckily buy this Matty well before the recent surge.

I sold my D304 set earlier this year in memory lane and prices were beyond insane- like 5x++ what I expected for many of them. I was thrilled. Seems that auction established a new baseline on pricing for D304s and they have been very expensive since that auction.

We'll have to see if that holds. My guess is, there was some excitement in that auction causing higher prices. Time will tell. For whatever reason, this set hasn't gotten the love it should have.
.

I really need another example as this is it, currently.

One of my most favorite issues. I was instantly smitten by the Matty, bought it on eBay and quickly accrued a player set plus a couple of the "no teams". This was nearly twenty years ago. Haven't looked at them for quite some time but this thread inspired me to give the boys some fresh air. I'm always mindful of the temptation to cash in on the current cardboard feeding frenzy but I'm reluctant to let go of these beauties. May have to down the road a bit. Not getting any younger.

At Saturday night's LOTG auction auction, the Eddie Collins in a SGC 3 holder went for, gulp, $6300. What has put a rocket under this set?

Wow. A full set of D304s is quite a sight. Incredibly cool.

This is one of my favorite sets. Something about the card size and the color palette has always grabbed me.

Sounds like some recent auctions have raised the bar on this set -- thanks everyone for the context.

That Collins price is wild. The only thing I can think of is that it's Butter Krust back, and maybe multiple Collins collectors were waiting for one to pop.

I only have 2 from this set, wish I had snagged more before this value surge.

Great pic David, and good to see you post. I hope all is well. Thanks again for helping me out on the Evers no team, I believe it completed my set.

I can think of a zillion things I would rather spend $21,000 on…

That was some crazy last-minute bidding on the Lajoie! I was the high bidder at some point early yesterday around $2K. Didn't expect to get it for that, but didn't expect $21K either!

"Are they increasing in value?"

There's no such thing as the present tense when it comes to prices. Only the past and the future.

In fact buyers should beware of anyone using the present tense when it comes to investing in general. That's a technique typically used by charlatans to extrapolate past price changes/increases to the future.
