I guess someone else saw this and, even though not noted, knew what it was. I think I have seen several other D311s like this. I am guessing it's a hand cut, missing yellow(?). Could it be considered scrap? It doesn't matter that much; just seeing what others think.
IF members have others, show them if you want to... It will most likely stay raw....it is what it is. ![]()

Cool card Leon. Here is what it normally looks like (not my card).

I don't have a lot of D311 cards, but I do have this wacky one of Oscar Vitt that has had its borders hand-manipulated (my term for this). Unlike Leon's card, mine has its full complement of colors.

I've seen one other like this for sale in the past, referred to as a bluegrass version. I do remember that the price was a good bit higher than the typical card.

Ahhh, a "bluegrass" variation! Very nice, those are amongst my favorite printing goofs and yes, they're very seldom seen. Mark Macrae told me a little about those about 20 years ago when I was putting together my first d311 set. I think this makes the third example that I have seen, overall. "Bluegrass" variations also have turned up in the 1910 T212-2 Obaks Series 150 cards. I believe there are about 6 total with the rare blue grass and other strange shades on the card.
I won one of these back in 2010 off of Ebay after having been on the lookout for them for several years at that point. Both Leon's Maggert and my Van Buren seem to have very similar shades of grass AND purples/pinks in the sky instead of orange. Here's a link to the thread that I started about that card - https://www.net54baseball.com/showth...ight=bluegrass d311vanb (1).jpg I'd say for the Van Buren and Maggert, there's definitely a yellow pass that got missed. Notice the sky in both cards has some interesting pink shades, so it's not just the grass with a unique color. Another interesting tidbit - even though there's no other visible oddity going on with them, there are actually a large number of d311s out there that are handcut. Many have narrow borders, but you'll see some like the Maggert and Van Buren from this thread that have oversized borders. This is another item in common with the Obaks since the 1909 set had nearly half the cards handcut! The only other "bluegrass" variation I've seen from the d311 set was this one I posted here - https://net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=248419. The grass did not seem to be fully "blue" in this one so maybe the yellow cartridge hadn't run out fully yet ![]() Last edited by shammus; 03-06-2024 at 06:08 PM. |

Real cool visuals. There are a handful documented and likely all the cards on that sheet were similarly printed…. Missing yellow… The sheet likely ended up in the dumpster, or was taken home by one of the printing company employees, where it was unceremoniously cut down by little Johnny with the dull scissors. All of the known examples are hand cut and that appears to have been done a LONG time ago. All of the ones that I have seen have the final version printed checklist on the reverse. Below is a side by side look of the Chadbourne cards

To all who posted, thanks.
We can't let a D311 thread go without showing one of the best poses in the set. A very jolly pose... And on the Arrelanes, I am the 2nd and 4th owner of the card since it was originally collected. It's from the Trucker Boy find and has the telltale water mark on the back. But what a sharlp card, otherwise.

Not sure if Aldon Candy or PCB overprints exist on D311s the way they do with D310s, I'd be interested in seeing back stamps/overprints on these if people have them. Anyone with a blank back?
Here's the one D311 I have with an Overprint..... lf.jpg |

Here is my one and only D311 . If my memory is still working I bought this one from Leon . I’ve always favored this Arrelanes pose. Wouldn’t mind upgrading . Hint hint @Leon if you ever decide to part with that beauty you own let me know.
