Hello. So I noticed recently there are two versions of Rollie Zeider in the 14 CJ set with different images.. Anyone have any insight as to why? Card #s 60 and # 116

No idea why he got two cards, but the back biography is the exact same.

Maybe they wanted to update the image to reflect him in his Federal League uniform.
I am not too familiar with this set. I know the 1914 issue was only released in the Cracker Jack packages. Would the fact the Rollie got an updated card (#116) utilizing his Chicago Federal League uniform (instead of the White Sox uniform seen in his card # 60) perhaps indicate that Cracker Jack cards were issued in two separate series, perhaps 1 through 72, and then the cards 73 through 144 at a later date? I have never heard of this before, but it does make sense to me. Anyone out there ready and capable of striking down this thought? Brian |

Just quickly glancing at the PSA pop reports for the 1914 set there does seem to be a pattern of more cards graded for cards numbered 1 through 72 than what is seen in card numbers 73 through 144.

14 CJs are tough to find good PSA graded examples in and of themselves
Cards 73-144 are even tougher...PSA has graded 5398 total to date 3300 1-72 2098 73-144 This works out to 61.13% being in the first group and 38.86% in the second group. On average there are 45 graded cards per player in 1-72 compared to 29 graded cards per player in 73-144. Zeider #60 has 54 PSA graded examples whereas Zeider #116 has 25 PSA graded examples.

Thanks Tony, nice to see the hard numbers on the 1914 availability split...my quick glance was fairly accurate. This pretty obvious higher number (#73 to 144) scarcity versus the lower numbers, coupled with the appearance of Zeider in each separate group with the same bio write-up on the backs, indicating that he was traded to the Chicago Federal team in early 1914, but a different image used on his card #116 wearing the Chicago Federal uniform, makes me believe that this set was issued in two groups, with the later print run of the second half of the subjects released at a reduced level.
I don't think I have seen this theory before. But then again I can't imagine I am the first to make this connection. Perhaps the Zeider angle is new... Brian Quote:

Frank Chance #99 with 41 and Joe Jackson #103 with 46 are the only players with more than 40 PSA graded examples in the second half 73-144.

Very interesting never really looked or thought of there being a difference i wonder if that holds true for the 15 set as well. Cars 60 was removed from the 15 set but 116 stayed the same. James G

I haven't looked at the pop reports but I would think that because the 15s were available as a complete set by mail order the same rule wouldn't apply.
