I’m probably pretty sure someone has discussed this before so not breaking new ground here but I’ve never been able to figure out the context of the picture used on the e121 Babe Ruth “holding bird”. Never could find anything to explain. But last night was reading “The Big Fella” by Jane Leavy and came across this on page 105, mystery solved!
“Communications were still so low tech that fans living on the East Side of Manhattan persuaded Charles Farbizo, a neighborhood resident, to take his flock of carrier pigeons to the Polo Grounds and send ininng-by-inning dispatches from the four-game series between the Yankees and the Cleveland Indians that would decide the 1921 American League pennant. RUTH WAS PHOTOGRAPHED RELEASING ONE OF THE PIGEONS ON SEPTEMBER 26” Mystery solved, now I can get on with my life. Hope I’ve solved this life-long mystery for someone else! |

You mean that story where the Babe tosses up the bird and hits it with his bat, over the fence, is not a true story?
![]() I always wondered about why he was holding the bird. Mystery solved! Thank you.

The question was answered several years ago when Rhys over at RMY Auctions auctioned the original image used with the paper caption still attached on back…

Sorry if I missed the answer to this, but...is the guy on the card with Babe then, Charles Farbizo?
Never mind - it's in the Instagram link. ![]() Last edited by kkkkandp; 02-20-2024 at 07:32 AM. |

From the movie - "The Accountant"
If you look all the way to the right next to the Mathewson CJ and under the Action Comics - you will see our beloved Ruth Bird In Hand. Even Ben Affleck wanted this card!!!
