Default Atomic Bowl, football in Nagasaki, 1946

On Jan. 1, 1946, a bunch of pro or college stars, including Heisman winner Angelo Bertelli and pro star Bill Osmanski, played what the press would dub The Atomic Bowl on a makeshift field in Nagasaki where many had been killed by the atomic bomb just a few months earlier. It's little known, but I've written about this, briefly, in three books and in a few seconds in my recent PBS film "Atomic Cover-up."

Nevertheless--almost no footage and very very few photos exist from that day so I am taking a wild long shot here to ask if anyone here might have something or have seen something posted somewhere, as I am now planning a film on this episode. Thank you!

You've undoubtedly seen this; it's pretty interesting.

Incidentally, having served aboard USS Midway CV-41 and USS Independence CV-62, both of which were forward deployed with Yokosuka, Japan as homeport, I have been to Sasebo numerous times. That base, on the southernmost main island of Kyushu, was very close to Nagasaki. I have been there.

thanks, yes have seen that

Sasebo was site of main Naval hospital for bomb victims and GIs

I spent a week in Nagasaki in 1984--very rare for an American to be there more than day or two....beautiful city, going back to Dutch...."only" half destroyed by bomb due to off-target...

might want to try Vintage Football Community. Jeff Payne (who is a member here) is the "Leon" over there and they have seriously advance FB collectors.
