Earlier today, I saw an old handwritten letter alluding to three Honus Wagner T206 cards - two Sweet Caporals and a Piedmont. I have never seen or heard of a T206 Piedmont Wagner, but I suppose it is possible. Can anyone confirm the existence of any T206 cards of the flying Dutchman featuring a non-Sweet Caporal back?

I believe there are 2 or 3 T206 Wagners with Piedmont backs. If I remember correctly they were all cut from sheets which is why there are only 2 or 3 of them. I think there a couple Piedmont back Planks as well that were also cut from sheets. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here as that wouldn't be unusual.

Mike,
I thought the PSA 8 Wagner was a Piedmont back but couldn't find an image of the front with the back like you posted above. Are the Piedmonts all cut from sheets like I'm remembering hearing or no? .

I believe yes. Same with Plank. All Wagners and Planks with Piedmont backs were not issued in packs and should have the A designation, including PSA’s first graded card (has there ever been a more perfectly ironic start to a business?). Notwithstanding my statement above, there is this SGC graded plank, with (the artist formerly known as) Goodwin Auction’s write up about an SGC numerically graded Plank. My gut is SGC made the same mistake as PSA did with the Gretzky Wagner, meaning all “experts” potentially make mistakes; the true difference between the two is we absolutely know the Wagner was cut from a sheet, bc the cutter admitted it, whereas, I am not sure we know where/how the SGC plank came to be. http://www.t206museum.com/page/periodical_119.html |

There is ZERO evidence that any of these T206's were cut from sheets post production. That is a mea culpa on the part of the bad actors to deflect blame.
All cards were cut from sheets originally, but no one has seen a sheet or partial sheet in the times since they were printed(The 5 card strip is a mock up and not an actual strip/sheet). Could they be scraps, perhaps but they were not cut from sheets in the 1920's or 1940's or 1990's. A close friend of mine owns one of the Wagner Piedmont's and it does have an upside down ghost, so very well could be scrap. It is documented to the 1950's so has a pedigree of sorts. |
