Great auction, as usual. I was surprised by the $1,800 close for a PSA 1.5 EPDG Chance red portrait. Should I have been?

Did you think it sold for too high or low on the final hammer? It was a really nice card for a 1.5 grade. I'm guessing people were bidding on the card and not the holder.

Lots of strong prices...some of the team postcards went lower than I expected.

If you have to ask whether someone was surprised because a T206 went too low or too high, then I'd say it really wasn't a surprise.

With the high number of rare or unique items LOTG had, it wasn't an auction where I had lots of expectations to be surprised about. I just did not know what to expect. My consignment ended up in a protracted bidding war so I woke up to a very pleasant surprise outcome on that.

I was surprised it went that high. I know a lot has happened in the past few years, but not long ago that would've been the price for a PSA 5 of the same card.

This was a phenomenal auction. Probably one of the most unique sets of items I've seen lately. This was probably the first auction where I stayed up until 2 am, trying to keep track of many items.
I thought some of the Ruth cards/auto/team photo went for less than I would have guessed. I was quite surprised and would have been all over them except for the fact that I was chasing the one of a kind Pelty lots. The Horner cabinet of Pelty is phenomenal--same photo on at least two of his cards, I believe. I was after that one, but it got away. Congrats to the winner of that cabinet (I was high bidder on a couple of lots, though, so happy about that). There are literally so many auctions right now, but this one stood out for me. Congrats, Al. Brian |

I thought it was an incredible auction. There were three items, specifically, that I wanted: (i) the 1906 W600 Tigers Team PC, (ii) the 1905 W601 Folio of Composites, and (iii) the 1834 Carver Book of Sports. I won the PC but gave up on the other two, felling they had achieved super-good prices (i.e., they we were well above what I thought they were worth); I am pretty sure it was me and one other person on the two items I lost.
As with most auctions, of the cards I was watching, some did really well, some ended where I thought they would, and there were a few bargains. The ones that did really well include -- The T215-1 Chase, the T216 Matty, the 1921 Exhibits Ruth. Some of the ones that ended where I thought they would include -- the W600 Wagner, the Maple Crispette Ruth, and 1915 and 1916 scorecards. Some of the ones I thought were barding include- the E107 Plank and the HM Taylor Cobb. All in all, I thought it was a great auction and I expect Al is very happy with the results. And, a 1.5 Chance Red EPDG for $1800 is super strong. Last edited by Rhotchkiss; 11-27-2022 at 05:21 PM. |

The items I watched and bid on all went for strong prices I was in on a lot of the Ruth items and all went for more than I thought and more than I was willing to go for.
Great auction and great selection. Just staying within my game plan On to the next one

It was a great auction. There were a few photos I intended to chase but works been crazy lately and with the Thanksgiving holiday and family still at our house I completely forgot the auction was closing Saturday.

I thought the Wheaties proofs were super cool looking… I had zero idea what they’d go for so I bid a bit blindly but got lapped for both the Joe D and the Arky Vaughn
The colors, the player images and even the corny player quotes are pure gold. Whoever won them, enjoy! Jeff

I was the underbidder on the W600 Wagner - realized late it was a type IV and decided to back off. Thought it was a good buy where it ended. Congrats to the new owner.
Happy to see the 21 Ruth get some love! Suspect it would be in a lower graded holder if it were graded today, so thought that was a strong price - but still a bargain compared to many of his other card issues from the same era. I thought I "stole" the 38 heads up Foxx PSA 6 $1400 Tough card period and really tough in that kind of condition. Agree the mix of items in the auction was pretty impressive

I sold a few items (not cards). The most significant one was the 1945 Happy Chandler contract.
Al and his team presented it as nicely as I possibly could have hoped, with a full, beautiful 2-page spread. Unfortunately for me, the bids didn't come in, and whoever won it got it for a significant haircut on what I paid. I hope they enjoy it. |

So, Adam, you were the one who outbid me on that Conlon Pelty...
I could not resist these two cabinets with Pelty. The expressions/poses were irresistible, and I bet they are the only copies on the planet. And one is a "pre-rookie" year photo. |

Maybe I'm just ignorant about the value of cards in my own collection. But I was shocked to see the $53K price tag on the Billiken Oscar Charleston in good condition, with a bothersome stain on the front. I have one in my collection that I think is nicer (no stain). Glad to see I have such a valuable card in my collection. I always knew it was special, but not THAT valuable.

I looked, but did not see any bargains in this one. Nice stuff, though.
I just saw that someone had all 250 Polar Bears in their 520 set. Very impressive. Has anyone else ever completed the Polar Bear set? Also, my recollection is that the 21 Ruth exhibit was a novelty card under a grand when I was younger. I may not be recalling that correctly. Nice pick-ups, all.

Extremely happy to pick up this snap of Christy Mathewson from the auction!
Though I disagree very much with PSA thinking it's a 1950s era copy. I think it's far closer to the 1930s era. ![]() ![]()

There are two complete 250s visible on the registry right now, then I'm pretty sure a couple board members have the whole subset, then I met someone at the National a few years ago who was within ten of having it finished...
Then there was this subset, then there was the one that got auctioned off individually at REA about three years ago... (I'm kicking myself for not picking up a Hindu Southern Leaguer in that one, but I did check off quite a chunk of the PB 460s.) I thought I'd work on it over the next few decades, but now that Demmitt and O'Hara are five-figure cards, I might have to be happy with eventually getting to 248.

Thanks, Lobo. I did not realize that PSA broke down the registry by backs. Nice.
Good luck on your Polar Bear run.

I was surprised by the hammer price on Lot #84, which was the only item that I actually thought seriously about: the Yankees-Indians scorecard and stubs from the game ending DiMaggio's hitting streak. What a cool item! I too wish I had more money.
