Default September Pick Up Thread

Starting the pickup thread for September.
Big card for my T205 HOF set, it took a long time to find one with good eye appeal in any grade.

Picked up this tough 1936 Wheaties Series 4 Gehrig with full borders to go along with the 1935 Series 1 and 1936 Series 3 pair I got at the National in July. My Gehrig trinity is now complete!!!

Plus I can eat my Wheaties in my 1937 Joe Dimaggio bowl every morning!!

Just picked this one up last night, 1928 Zeenut Dolph Camilli. Pretty beat but given how tough it is, I'm not complaining.

1928 Lou Gehrig Exhibits.

Hands down my favorite Lou Gehrig image and one I’ve wanted in my collection from the first day I saw it.

Coming off his record breaking 1927 campaign, arguably one of the greatest seasons put together by any batter in history. This image shows Gehrig at the height of his career following through on a classic power swing that earned him the moniker “Iron Horse”. I imagine him following the ball to an outfield wall in the gap which he did so many times during the 1927 & 1928 seasons.

Just to put in perspective how good a hitter Gehrig was.

In 1927, Gehrig hit .373, with 218 hits: 101 singles, 52 doubles, 18 triples, 47 home runs, a then-record 175 RBIs (surpassing teammate Babe Ruth's 171 six years earlier), a .474 on-base percentage and a .765 slugging percentage.

In 1928, he hit .374, with 210 hits, 123 singles, 47 doubles, 13 triples, 27 home runs, 142 RBI’s, a .468 OBP, and .649 slugging percentage.

Oh, and in a 4-game sweep of the Cardinals in the 1928 World Series he averaged .545, .706 OBP, and 1.727 slugging which still stands as a World Series record today.

Truly, “The Iron Horse”.

When feeling priced out of the current vintage baseball card market, do as I did...pick up some of these T113 Types of Nations cards and imagine that they are baseball players wearing less commonly seen baseball caps.

I am pretty sure the one from Wales wearing an upside down flower pot with wide rim is Harry Wright, depicted as an older gentleman.

This thread was right next to the fakes and counterfeits thread, so it got me thinking. But I'm sure all these beauties are real. They sure look like it...

My guess in the 1910's the makers of these cards figured that was close enough...

Thanks Tony. I finally lucked out and found one that wasn't being offered by an auction house. No bidding war, and a fair price. Very happy to add it to the collection.

Thanks Steve,

I can only blame Al Crisafulli for this months acquisitions, one more to go this month then I'm hanging up my spurs.

Interesting story about Hooper, when he retired he moved to the town I currently live in and lived one street over from the first home I bought. He's buried in a small churchyard cemetery that I can walk to from my current home.

I believe it is (of course prior to his ocular encounter with metal clamps).

To remain on topic, he also played a mean 3rd base.

There is recoloring around the D and the top of the red on the front, and penciling in missing text portions on the back, including portions of the rear border.

OT, but I liked the balance of lighting and contrast in this fantasy piece.

I’ve recently started getting into PCL cards and I love the look of this one, but did Gira not have a first name? Odd that the slab only says Gira.

Late to the game and too many great pickups to mention. But Ruths, a Gehrig. A Drum, and an HOF t206 NGO stick out- congrats Chuck, Phil, Chris, Leon and everyone else on some awesome additions

It looks like his first name was Frank as per https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=gira--001fra. He is the only person with that last name on Baseball Reference.

I have twelve Zeenuts, and they all only have the last name on the card, and they are all slabbed with only the last name (even when the player is fairly well known, such as Ping Bodie).
