Putting aside the insanity of cutting apart a Jackie jersey, this is from a Los Angeles Dodgers jersey as the comments made clear. Brooklyn Dodgers . . . Los Angeles Dodgers . . .who really cares . . . . |

Although unlikey, it's possible this was an aftermarket "patch swap" where a scammer will replace a relatively drab jersey piece with a more pizzazzy jersey piece. There are a bunch of threads on blowout about it, but mainly those are modern football (NFL Shields/team logos) and basketball (Logomen/team logos).

Does it make anybody else feel better they didn't actually cut up a Jackie jersey for this particular scheme?

There is a possibility that should be considered (as BS as this whole thing is).
Did Jackie Robinson ever don that type of LA Dodgers uniform in an old-timer's game or such out in Los Angeles? Or some sort of appearance during a game or event after the move westward? That could give the patch plausible deniability with regards to it being an outright fraud.

I must admit I've never understood the whole "game used" relic/patch thing... Used by whom and in which game?

I like the early game used where the backs have a disclaimer saying "Congratulations! You have received a card with a piece of (X) used by (Y player) in an official, major league game". It doesn't meant the item is genuine, but it means the company is making a risky bet if it is not as they can be held liable. At this time, many of the big ticket items were specifically known, I remember one of the manufacturers buying a Ruth item for over $100,000 for example. Some were publicly known to be transacted to the makers. You never hear about this anymore as they keep spitting out relics of long gone legends who have very few items known.
By 2009 when this card came out, the cards are basically promising nothing at all. "Congratulations! You have received a genuine memorabilia card" doesn't promise jack. |

I figure collect what you like. Because I don't care for a tiny piece of fabric somehow sandwiched between the sports card doesn't mean others feel the same way. But then again, I never bought into Rookie card phenomenon that arose in the late 1970's - I missed the boat on that one and was rather going after what I thought were cool cards of the All-Stars with the little All-Star insignia printed on the card.
Haha. I am almost 57 years old, have collected cards since I was 7 years old, and grew up watching Nolan Ryan at Anaheim Stadium in the 70's. I just recently picked up the 1968 Ryan rookie - the very first one I have ever owned. Am I on the boat now? |

And if the patch was real it would be sad. Being as it probably isn't, it's still sad.
