Good guess, but no cigar. Devlin had more than 46.6 CG per year, but he only played 3 years. The person in question played for longer, although did not have a long career by baseball standards.

I cheated as well and even then I’m not sure. I think I have it. Good trivia.

Jim McCormick is not in the Hall of Fame I don't think. That's who came to mind.

He had some mind-boggling stats: he pitched 72 complete games (out of 74 starts) and 657 innings, and managed a 1.85 ERA in 1880. Supposedly he won 45 of his team's 47 wins. Part of his longetiviy in 1880 may be attributed to the fact that pitchers couldn't throw overhanded until 1884. But he was 21-3 with an ERA of 1.54 in 1884, so I guess the transition to overhand didn't hurt him at all. He had double-digit WAR 3 times. Great trivia question! |
