Who immediately bought Minnie Minoso, Gil Hodges, Tony Oliva or Jim Kaat cards today, before eBay sellers were able to 'adjust' their prices waaa-aaay upward??
Decided to grab a 1970 Topps #510 Tony Oliva PSA 9 (not bad at all) OC off of COMC for (in light of his HOF election) a very decent price.

I didn't, but I think for Hodges and Minoso, a lot of the HoF bump was already priced in.

The real question. How many of you listed cards of those players at outrageous prices today? ![]() |

Did a quick, non-scientific examination. Searching through "SOLD" eBay auctions using the very basic "Oliva PSA," here's how many cards were sold each day of this month:
Dec. 5 (so far): 46 (The day Oliva was elected to the HOF.) Dec. 4: 3 Dec. 3: 5 Dec. 2: 4 Dec. 1: 3

I bought a ton of Kaat signed cards. I get as many hof signed topps cards as possible. I grabbed 13 Kaats. They add up but as a whole it was a reasonable price. He stopped doing TTM a year ago and his signing fee is sure to go up for a few years.

I haven’t pulled the trigger yet, but will be picking up a Kaat soon, in keeping with a Topps era HoF pitcher run I started.
It won’t be a RC, so hopefully I can avoid the biggest markups associated with his ‘60 Topps. |

Here's the split for Jim Kaat, also using the very basic "Kaat PSA":
Dec. 5 (so far): 52 (The day Kaat was elected to the HOF.) Dec. 4: 2 Dec. 3: 4 Dec. 2: 2 Dec. 1: 1

That 53 Bowman of Minoso is a beautiful card. The whole set is gorgeous, and Minoso's is just one example.

I bought several Minoso cards over the last year leading up to this. I like these two the best:
![]() ![]() Yesterday before the announcement I bought several more. I had planned to chase after them anyway-I've been going through the Standard Catalog looking for tough obscure cards of players I collect then searching for them on eBay-but decided to BIN them before the sellers tripled the prices. Glad I did.

Puzzling photo of Minnie on the '55 Bowman card: Looks like he is in a bunting pose, but if that's a dugout behind him, how does it have a TV set playing? Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread.

According to ebay asking prices, minoso now 2nd most valuable card in the low series under May's. Good luck with that

I was set up at the Valley Forge show over the weekend and no one pulled the trigger on a nice 52 I was offering nor any of the 6 1950's and 60's certified autographed Minoso cards I was offering!

I've tried to stay ahead of elections...which, of course, is relatively easy in most cases. I'll buy at least a few of likely candidates, though I had to scramble with Mazeroski and then Baines.

I did buy a '56 Topps Gil Hodges for my set last Saturday before the results were announced Sunday. One of the rare instances anything like that I've done has actually felt somewhat predictive in hindsight. I shouldda bought a Dick Allen too!

I'm not a big fan of the '55 Bowman set, but this is a beautiful card. Something about the composition and color palette. Plus he was coming off a tremendous year. I picked one up in an auction that concluded shortly after the announcement.

I think his 52 Bowman is visually far superior to his 52 Topps. Artistically, the Topps is just not a well conceived card IMO.

Yeah, I don't remember my baseball coaches ever saying "So, when you want to get a bunt down, you wait for the pitch with the bat approximately parallel to the ground at shoulder level, with the knob stuck under your right armpit. Your thumb should be wrapped around the bat so that it will get smashed by an inside pitch."

I prefer the 1952 Topps overall. Bowman is too cartoony for me. Probably why I am not a fan of the 1953 Topps either. I so wish he'd been in 1954 and 1955 Topps.

I was lucky enough to have this "Orestes" included in the cards my father gave me.
Keeping with the theme of this thread, I should have purchased more of his cards like I said above, but just yesterday and today, I decided to purchase an Exhibit and a post card of his.

I was tempted to put up my 54 Gil Hodges PSA 4MK for sale but it felt like a dick move. No offense to the dozens of folks who are capitalizing on the situation. I like the way the card looks anyhow and so I’ll keep it even though I believe it will never be worth more than it is this week. If I had a more valuable card like a 52 Minoso or something like that I would probably sell. I do have a 62 Minoso but that one difference in digit makes it a significantly less valuable card.

I will often check out the autograph prices when a player dies, similar to the spike you are talking about here. LaMarr Hoyt broke the curve when he died. Not much had sold prior, but around the time it was announced, they started flying off the shelves! Not uncommon at all.
I buy mostly autographs now, so I have tried to get the players ahead of time that I think may go up in cost. It happens all the time, but with only so much $ to spread around, we often get let holding the empty bag. I think Rod Carew for example is one to grab now if you somehow don't have one already. He seems to have signed a lot of stuff, but when he goes, people will still be jumping on everything.
