Hi everyone,
I recently was given this old picture. Its obviously clear what it is. It is (as labeled) a photo of the Chicago Stars Ladies Baseball Club. It is on some sort of thick card stock. Do you guys have any more info on this? Is there significant historical value? Monetary value? Why was it made/distributed? Any help you guys could give would be appreciated. It's the same image as one in the Hall of Fame but yours has borders.
What size is the image only? The one in the HOF is 4.25 X 4. https://collection.baseballhall.org/...raph-undated-0 Last edited by Pat R; 11-16-2021 at 05:44 AM. |

Most of the information on them is from 1902 and 1903 this could be all the ladies in the picture.

One sold in 2019 at auction. It was lot #13, seen in the catalog below. The sold price can be seen in the second link. Here is the auction catalog description:
“Women’s Baseball Cabinet Style Photo Offered is an unusual 5 1/2 x 4 cabinet style photo on thick stock. This is titled Chicago Stars Ladies Baseball Club and appears to be 19th century from the image. The original photographer was a F.A. Mintzner of Evansville, Indiana. SGC did not slab this as they had no other information. We presume this to be original, but we are not 100% sure and it is being sold strictly as-is.” https://www.cleansweepauctions.com/p...019auction.pdf https://www.cleansweepauctions.com/i...tem=0000638448 Here is some info on the team: http://wrigleyville.locals.baseballp...chicago-stars/ You can also see the same image in that link, on a different item, that identifies each player. Note that F.A. Muntzer's name is shown in the bottom left corner on that item. Muntzer likely took the portrait photos as well. The original image is probably circa 1902, March 1902 to be more specific. The Chicago Stars were in Evansville for a week of training and to play local teams. The ladies likely found themselves in the studio during that week in late March 1902. I believe the photographer was actually Fred (F.A.) Muntzer. You can find other Muntzer images through Google, including postcards. Being on thick stock, this item may have been a souvenir of that week in 1902. As an interesting side note, Muntzer thought he potentially owned a Stradivarius violin which was shown in the Evansville Courier and Press 6/16/1935. Thank you so much everyone for the info. Only at net54 can you ask for the origin of a rare photo, and get the origin, the date it was taken, and find out that the photographer thought he owned a Stradivarius violin. Lol.
For the person that asked, the approximate size of the image itself is 3 9/16 by 2 7/8. |

Maud Nelson was one of the great women baseball players of that era. She married Joe Olson who would go on to manage The Cherokee Indians Native American barnstorming team.
