without relief pitchers or pitch counts in a little over 4 hours
16 innings, 428 pitches (Juan 227, Spahn 201), pitch clocks or ghost runners Final score 1-0 with walk-off home run by Willie Mays in the bottom of the 16th. spahn and juan.jpeg 59 years ago Spahn was 42 years old, but Juan's kick was a little higher. ![]()

Incredible. Had to look up the box score out of curiosity.
Spahn vs. Marichal Mays and McCovey vs. Aaron and Matthews The only extra base hit off Marichal, was a double by Spahn himself. Game won by a Willie Mays HR. Mays also threw a runner out at Home Plate in the 4th inning, preserving the shutout at the time for Marichal. Pretty much a perfect game of baseball. |

And McCovey hit a monster shot that landed in Oakland, (or so he says) early in the game. The umpire allegedly was the only one at the ballpark who actually thought it was a foul ball.
Of course there was limited video in 1963, no challenges so they couldn't find a replay umpire in New York to overturn the call. Hitting against Marichal with his kick was described by some as facing a piece of farm equipment.
