Was going through some old boxes, and found this book from 1976 that (as you can tell by the condition) we used pretty extensively for many years to look up sports memorabilia. It was a cool book with lots of pictures and several nice color sections with pictures of type cards and items I had never seen. Flipping through it, I saw the entry for Dormand postcards, and found it interesting that they called out the scarcity of the Hodges card. Any of you who collect Dormand postcards (and why wouldn't you, since they are beautiful) know that the Hodges card is no longer scarce. I seem to recall hearing that a stash of the Hodges card was found (15-20 years ago?) Was wondering if anyone had the full story. I am guessing the original print run got stuck in a box and lost for many years, but that is all speculation.

I read somewhere that after Dormond's death boxes of cards, including Hodges, were found in his basement. That may or may not be true, of course.

That's pretty amazing. It's surprising that the family member cleaning out the estate didn't toss them in the garbage. What a loss that would have been!

Thanks for the info! Makes sense and the timing of the find sounds about right from what I recall seeing.

Good news, bad news. Great to allow 700 more collectors the chance at one. Bad news, it crushed the value of the card. I have seen them offered for as low as $10!

Should you wish to enjoy a chapter from a book devoted to the Dormands, and specifically the storied Gil Hodges Dormand, I still have copies of my E-book on a CD, Never Cheaper By the Dozen. The chapter is ten pages long, entitled, "TOUGHEST TO FIND THAT BECAME EASIEST TO GET". The book runs $30 a copy, postpaid first class mail. Either message me if you're interested, or Google the title and you shall find the 2016 press release from Sports Collectors Digest, still there for all to see. It has the ordering details, all still valid.
From reading the posts, you guys know most of the story. However, just in case you might be interested.... ![]() Cheers. --- Brian Powell Last edited by brian1961; 10-13-2021 at 08:33 AM. |
