Here are my top 5:

3. T206 Griffith batting PSA 7, Drum back4.
4. T206 Cobb Red, PSA 7 EPDG back.

Years back, I had a 1958 Alifabolaget Pele rookie in PSA 8.5. I sold it for over $13,000 USD and set a record price. People thought the whole thing was crazy because nobody gave a shit about soccer cards back then.

Now, this card is worth $350,000 - $400,000 USD.

I'm not a brain surgeon or one of America's top criminal lawyers who charges a thousand dollars per hour. So, when I think about this card, it makes me very sad.

I sold my '25 Gehrig to Hal, in a 5 holder (think it's in a 6 now) for 10k, about 17? yrs ago. I can just quit now. The rest pale...

I won it raw in a Mastro auction in 1997, pre internet. It was listed as NRMT-MT. I was on vacation in Mexico and placed a phone bid from my shower at the end...

I sold a '34 Goudey Gehrig, '41 Play Ball DiMaggio, '58 Topps Mantle along with about 15 other great cards for what I remember was $200 in the mid-1990s. Just for gas money, food, etc. I was a Navy CPO at the time, stationed in Charleston, family in Fort Lauderdale, and I was driving all 540 miles each way virtually every weekend that I did not have the duty. Needless to say, money got to be tight. I memorized everything on US Highway 17 and Interstate 95. I could not take out a loan due to my Top Secret clearance up for periodic review (You had to be squeaky clean, no issues or skeletons in the closet of any kind). I vowed I would never do anything like that again, and I still feel sick about it to this day.

know this feeling well. I sold a number of football set late 50s and 60s back in 1989 so I could get Upper Deck baseball sets and the elusive KG'j. I busted a boat load of packs and could never the "The Kids" card.

I had a second year Joe Willie Namath that was in beautiful shape. Traded it for two boxes of 89 UD wax. Busted them open and again I was DENIED! ARRRRRGGGGHHHH.

But, who knew then that football cards would eventually become more desirable.
I also had a 1968 Topps Football set that had the entire second series blue backs. I bought them from Card Collector Company for not very much. That and some other sets were traded for 89 Upper Deck Factory sets.

1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle w period autograph encapsulated by GAI graded 2 with authentic autograph. Purchased about 20 years ago on Ebay with a BIN for $1000. I think the owner thought the autograph was written by a kid since it looked nothing like his card show version. I knew it was authentic and Mike Guiterrez was the GAI authenticator at the time. Thought I was brilliant when I doubled my money within an hour of listing it the day I received it. The card has never surfaced again so I assume a real collector has it socked away.

My list has much less 'huge' cards as seen on some, but I do have a few it would be nice to get back:

E121 Babe Ruth holding bird (thanks a lot stupid creepy guy in ill-fitting suit standing next to Ruth...he made me sell this card). If Babe had only just been by himself holding the bird...

W516 Babe Ruth. I still have a tiny chunk of the upper left corner of this card glued onto a piece of paper. It came to me separated from the rest of the card, and I sold the big part of the card long ago. Someday I will share this top left corner with you all.

E121 Cobb (forgot which pose). It was advertised as VG (no photo), and when I received it was Good at best. I refuse to identify how dirt cheap the price was, even for the time. Hey, it was the principal of thing, you know? Stupid return number 1.

Zeenut Joe Dimaggio. Many years ago I won an auction for it at a real decent price, and when I got it found out that it had an undisclosed rebacking. I actually don't mind rebacked Zeenuts, and didn't at that time either. Stupid return number 2.

E104-1 blank back Eddie Collins. I traded this one away, and good news, many years later I found another one, so sometimes these stories have happy endings.

Actually, that was true of everything but baseball for a time. One of the stupidest things I ever did financially speaking was trading a big box of football cards for a 1941 Play Ball Whit Wyatt. But at the time the FB cards were worth $0.10-$0.25 each and the Wyatt was several dollars.

Speaking of which, let's also go with all-time dumbest trades you made. Besides that one:

--PC796 Plank for CJ Plank. Wanted a CJ and besides, those PCs are never gonna be worth much. D'oh! Every time I see a PC796 Plank sell I throw up a little in my mouth.
--1964 Mays and 1965 Mantle for a half dozen minor HOFers the best of which was a 1966 Cepeda. In fairness to me I was about 8 years old and got ripped off by a shark of an older kid. It was the sort of trade your parents might undo for you if they found out about it because the older boy took such advantage.

This thread strikes me as almost confessional in tone, so I'll tell get mine off my chest. About 25 years ago, I needed some quick cash, so I took my WaJo card binder to the Fort Washington Philly Show to shop it around. I've always been more of a memorabilia guy anyway, and many of my cards had been given to me by a friend of my Mom's who got into cards very early and would pick up WaJo's for me when he found them cheap, so selling them didn't seem like any great sacrifice when I really needed money. I had all the basic cards, most in G-VG condition, but there were also some extreme rarities, like a Texas Tommy type I, BB Bats, Vassar Sweaters, others, along with some great early postcards. I decided on a price of 4K for the binder, and started with Bill Huggins, who turned the pages quickly and without a word pushed the binder back across his display case to me. The next stop was to Dean Zindler, set up near by, who told me the price was too high. "What the Hell?" I thought, I KNOW these cards are worth that much, and started breaking the binder up to sell individual cards at that and several succeeding shows. After quickly pocketing about 8K for maybe half the contents, I was feeling pretty proud of myself. The next show after Fort Washington was a tiny show promoted by Phil Wood outside of Baltimore that had some great dealers but for which few collectors showed up, and my friend Val Kehl happened to be the lucky WaJo fanatic who got the pick of the binder largely still intact. I remember gouging him out of $300 for the Texas Tommy and sticking him for a few hundred more for what I now know are some of the rarest WaJos around. If he sees this, he can offer more details of his bounty, and my consolation is that if there is one collector whom I would never begrudge this good luck, it is Val, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Among the many other consolations in telling this sad tale--including how great the hobby has been to me in general all these years--is the fact that I, like most of us, would like to have back everything we've ever sold, but this is the one I do still think about from time to time, although I try not to think about it too often--how much would I be able to extract from that binder today?

It is mind-boggling, and the only explanation is that things were a LOT different back then. I don't think either of them spent more than a couple minutes looking through my binder before making clear their disinterest. Today, collectors--and especially dealers--would be running from all over the room to look through those cards and postcards.

Over the years, I've liquidated a lot of my collection in order to make larger purchases. I have sold some that were still expensive back then and become even more expensive looking at prices today and then some that weren't (and still aren't valued too much today) that I regretted for the simple fact that its hard finding again with great corners, edges and centering.

I let go of a 52 Topps Mantle (for three times what I paid for it but still miss that card), a 59 Salesman Sample Mantle, a Mission Soda Mantle, and a few 51 Mantle Photo Cards. Wish I’d kept them all. My biggest regrets are the ones I haven’t gotten, the Briggs Meats when Vahl offered it to me, a 53 Yamakatsu Mantle I just couldn’t swing, and a Rawlings Mantle that came up when I was saving for something else…. One day I’ll have more regrets than cards….

In addition to an E224-1 Texas Tommy, some of the other WaJos I was fortunate to obtain from Hank are: 1910 Baseball Bats (see my avatar), M116 Sporting Life, 1926 Sports Co. of America, and 4 different stamps - T332 Helmar, 1915 Postaco, 1937 Kellogg's Pep, & 1939 Centennial.

Although I am much more into cards than memorabilia, I do have an affection for WaJo notebooks. And, I treasure this photo of WaJo batting that you insisted I accept for connecting you with a buyer of a few of your signed WaJo checks.

Despite having the world's worst memory, I'll never forget how you managed to get this scarce PM6 pin of WaJo into my collection. At the 2016 National at Atlantic City, you and I happen to run into one another shortly after you had sold this pin to a dealer. As we chatted, you mentioned this, and I said that I wished you and I had connected before you sold this pin. You then had me accompany you to this dealer's table, whereupon you told the dealer that your friend would like to have this pin, so please sell it to him for a small markup over what he had just paid for it. The surprised dealer appeared displeased with this turn of events, but he acquiesced.

Those who have been Net54 members for a while presumably are already aware that Hank is one of the really good people in our hobby. Now, Net54 newbies are also aware.

Hmm...

Most of the contributors to this particular section of Net54 either have or have owned far more "advanced" collectible cards than what I am going to list, but this is where I was at as a collector.

Over the years I have owned and let slip away:

1951 Bowman Mays, purchased for 9.50 in December of 1975, it was in fair to good condition.

1954 Topps Aaron purchased for 7.50 in early 1976, but I bought it intending to sell it to the person who I helped at card shows.

A salesman sample flipbook of the 1952 Star Stickers with Jackie Robinson on the front, I used it as a part of a trade for the 68 Clemente 3D I needed for my collection.

Lots of Clemente cards as he was my favorite player. They included autographs, Kahns, Bazookas, the 68 3D, a super clean 62 Sugardale, the original artwork for the 72 Kellogs 3D, and many Topps test issues. I broke up the collection throughout 1991 when I decided to leave the hobby.

Display boxes: 1951 Topps Red Backs, 1959, 1960, 1961 (baseball and football), 1962, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, and 1970. They all disappeared in a burglary in 1989, but strangely no cards were taken.

My complete sets of Topps Football 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, and 1975 along with my Topps Basketball sets for 1971-72, 1972-73, 1973-74, and 1974-1975. I also had partial sets in both football and basketball. All I can say is they went to a person who appreciated them more than I did back in 1976 (I literally gave them all away.)

My 1971 Kellogs 3D Football set and a group of 120 1962 Post Football where each card was cut perfectly and included a number of the hard to get singles. I owned these a decade after getting rid of my first collection.

In 1973 as a 12-year-old I bought a group of 1968 Topps Baseball series 1 and 2 for the princely sum of $5.00. I remember having multiples of the Mays and the Ryan. A few years later they were gone.

Working in a card store I was able to purchase an unopened box of 1986 Fleer Basketball for $25 and a complete set with stickers for about $15. I sold them both in 1991 for a good profit, but now...

The only vintage sets I completed way back when over 30 years ago were the 1959 and 1971 Topps Baseball sets. When I walked away from the hobby in 1991, I sold both sets.

To assemble my 1953 Bowman Color and my post-1970 Topps Baseball sets, I had to sell my Topps Heritage Baseball Master sets. I really miss the 2006 and 2008 versions and wished that I had held those two back.
