In other words how much more would this card be worth if the white lines in the green background were not there? I'm not looking for bids or offers, just opinions. Not For Sale

To make me sound less like a jerk I will need to edit my original answer because I initially didn't realize that Mr. Burkett owns the card. If this card was to somehow fall into the wrong hands within six months it will be on BlowOut after a card doctor gets ahold of it and recolors it, PSA bumps up the grade considerably, and PWCC puts it up for auction. Sorry Frank.

"how much more would this card be worth if the white lines in the green background were not there?" A lot!!
Its a great looking card. I think it grades a 4-5 without the marks, and great eye appeal. An SGC 4 sold in LOTG on 4/4/21 for $25,830 (note that an SGC 4 was a $10k card a year ago and a $17k card in January) An SGC 5 sold in Heritage on 7/24/21 for $27,600 - it is nicer than yours without the lines. So lets say that an SGC 4 - SGC 5 ranges from $18k - $28k. Recent SGC 2 sales average to about $6700 ($5,700 and $7,700, both PWCC). So, to answer your question, based on these comps, I think you card is worth about $6,500 (slight downward adjustment for PWCC comps), but it would be worth about $22k without them. So, in my opinion, the white lines are worth $16k+/- Can you tell I have no big plans this Saturday night?!?! |

Damn Frank, when I first read the title I thought you were going to regale us with your adventures of running drugs & guns up the coast of California in the 1980's.

I certainly was not expecting the white lines to be on a baseball card!

Ideally, to satisfy the centering freaks, this Cobb would have equivalent lines coming in from the right border.

The market today is definitely not where it was back in April. I think this card would have a ceiling of a 4 without the white marks. A realistic value on it today in a 4 holder is probably about 20k and as it currently sits, I think it would outsell most 2s, probably because as others have pointed out, this card screams "potential" to all the Van Goghs out there in the hobby. They would probably all compete pretty heavily for a chance to make this their next masterpiece. I think it sells closer to 8-9k today. So the white lines are "worth" about 12k per my estimate.

The card is beautiful and luckily those lines are off to the side. IT is amazing how much those lines or any imperfections can so dramatically affect the value of the card.
But it is a great card for any T206 collection

Apart from the white lines, with the current expressed centering obsession on this forum, I'm surprised that only one member suggests that this card is worth more than the average 2 and only if a Van Gogh is the buyer.
Buy the flip still rules I guess. A 2 is a 2 is a 2 and a 4 is a 4 is a 4. Right??? ![]()

Playing with cards on a Saturday night sounds pretty good to me. We went out for an early dinner yesterday after a loooonggg day doing a garage sale (I paid for dinner with a giant stack of one-dollar bills) then came home and I did the same. A little herb thrown in for good measure...

I agree that a card is better than the grade if you own it.
However we have more than several members here who say they pay a premium for centered cards and in my experience they have.

In the last PWCC premier auction, there were two 1952 Topps Mickey Mantles that sold. One was a 1.5, the other was a 3.5. The 1.5 sold for more than the 3.5 entirely because of eye appeal despite the fact that it had a giant crease across Mantle's face. |

People keep saying this but it is just not true. There is a card up for auction right now with two similar print marks like this Cobb. However instead of 2 it is a 7. The grader didn't feel those lines devalued the card at all. It is currently above recent comps. There are at least 2 people bidding on this card that don't care about eye appeal, all they care about is the number on the holder. I see this all of the time. There are lots of buyers that only care about the number.
