Show-n-Tell which Tobacco cards you have are your favorites, post as many as you like

Too much consternation over "plastics" going on here lately on this forum. And, not enough said regarding the "cardboard" gems
we love so much. Therefore, let's bring back some joy here by "Talkin' BB" cards again. Show us your favorites and tell us a story
about them. I will start with these 9 gems of mine. Feel free to post as many of your favorite Tobacco cards as you would like.


The GOODWIN CHAMPIONS (N162) set is my favorite set. It is Sports Lithography at it's best.
All together I have completed 3 of these sets in the process of upgrading my original 50- card
set (which I started in 1989).
King Kelly is my favorite card, followed by Anson. The GOODWIN CHAMPIONS Album is absolutely my all-time favorite.

Here's my 1st T206 card (acquired at Willow Grove in 1981). This image of Chase really appeals
to me. I remember as a kid reading that Babe Ruth said Chase was the best 1st Baseman in BB.

My ole buddy (and co-author) Ralph Triplette found this rare BROAD LEAF Chase in a hobby shop
in his hometown in the the Smokey Mtn. region of N.C. I said it is "rare", because when we did a
trade for it, it was the only one known (circa 1994).

Here's another extremely tough to find Chase card. There is only one 1910 COUPON card of Chase
listed in the PSA pop report (and I think it is this card). Perhaps our resident 1910 COUPON "King"
Rob McKenzie will chime in on this.

In 1996, I acquired a bunch of T213-1 cards. Sold most of them at the Philly Show. Of course I kept this Chase,
for it certainly was he nicest card in the lot.

More recently, I won this "toughie" from a Heritage Auction in 2016. I only need his CAROLINA BRIGHTS and CYCLE 460
cards to complete this Chase run.

This McGraw was printed in the 460-only Series. It is one of 12 subjects in this Series which I refer to as the Exclusive 12.
To find these cards with a UZIT back is virtually impossible. To date, only 5 of these 12 subjects have been confirmed with
UZIT. My McGraw is one of a kind....it is unique.

And, last but not least.....

Eddie Plank finally completes my SWEET CAPORAL, Factory #30 T206 set (468 cards).

Ted, SGC has 6 T213-1 Hal Chase portraits on their pop report, not sure if it is accurate or not. I used to have these 2 lower grade raw ones. I still have one, and traded the other to a Chase collector on here.

I can't pick only 7 cards, but here are a few that are fun to have...My memory is not the best, but the story of the T213-3 Chance is... around 1982 at a motel show next to the Astrodome, my Dad bought the card for me. I had it until the mid 90's and traded it away. I was able to buy it back a few short years later, realizing my mistake.

Here are some tobacco flavored favorites, 7 picked amongst a bunch of others vying for attention.

T206 Mathewson - because it was in the first group of vintage cards I purchased.

T210 Old Mill Mulldowney - because I like his attitude

T206 Lefty Leifield - because I have always loved the colors and pose

T207 Hoff - because of its scarcity and especially the Barker back notations

Obaks - because Obak cards are just plain amazing

Gypsy Queen Connor - because I always thought this was an Old Judge card, and after posting here was informed that it was actually a Gypsy Queen

Here are a few of my favorite T cards in my collection. No big stories behind some of them.

1. The T215 Red Cross - I never thought I would own this card. It's the only graded example of the Billy Purtell Jersey City card so I'm very excited to have him in my Jersey City collection.

2. T206 Jack Hannifin - My first ever T206 and also a Jersey City player. This is the card that started my Jersey City collection.

3. C46 Butler - not a T card but still a tobacco card from Canada and, again, part of the Jersey City collection.

4. T206 Walsh. I just really like this card in the set and it's a nice HOFer.

T206 White Border Molesworth (the ONLY Birmingham Baron in the entire set) - All collections need at least one T206
T205 Gold Border Speaker (HOF centerfielder) - love the distinct designs for American League, National League and Minor League players
T227 Series of Champions de Oro - underappreciated set that covers many sports including baseball, billiards, boxing, golf and racing...hoping to discover that final 25th card design

One of my favorite items is my T4 Obak Cabinet. Here is the T4 Cabinet with several T212s and a Studio Cabinet of Claude Berry.

Another favorite is my Joseph Laughlin Old Mill Cabinet with his T210 Old Mill card.

My next favorite T206 portrait card (2nd to Chase) is the Walter Johnson. I have several WJ portrait cards, but this one has an interesting story.
Most of you who know me, know I am not a fan of graded cards. Circa 2004, I decided to get it graded, since it appeared to be one of my nicest
T206 cards.
At the Philly Show, PSA was grading cards. So, I submitted this WJ to them. They returned it to me with an "evidence of trimming"" note. I was
furious, and PSA's manager told me...."that's your opinion ! Our professional opinion is, it is trimmed !"
SGC was situated at the far end of the Fort Washington showroom. I brought this WJ card to SGC. They graded it a "40". And pointed out to me
that there was a very faint trace of glue on its back. Which viewed under magnification was evident. This experience taught me to trust SGC.







The AMERICAN BEAUTY 460 back is my favorite T-brand. Circa 2005, I started my run of these T206's (74 cards). This back is under-rated in my opinion.
It's been a long work in progress. Eight years ago, though, my major acquisition was this Cobb. Thanks to Jay Miller (old judge). He contacted me, since
he was breaking up his run of Cobb (bat off shoulder) cards. Several years before, I helped Jay get started on this run. I now have 73 (of the 74) AB 460
cards. Still searching for one.

Good luck on that last AB460, Ted. I know that back is very underrated. There are so many very low pop cards to that run.



A board member discovered this previously unknown card of Mickey Welch and I was able to buy it from him. There was a long discussion about whether this card is an un-checklisted N284. Most people came away calling it a "Buchner-like" card. It has a blank back, maybe skinned, or maybe cut from an ad poster. I keep it with my other N284's. Here is an N284 Keefe for comparison.

As a note of interest - I acquired the Walter Johnson T213 card from the infamous eBay seller known as Battlefield Vintage. I guess they weren't totally corrupt yet in their earlier selling days.

My #1 collecting focus is cards of all the players who were on the Washington Senators 1924 World Series Championship team. Many players on this team, such as HOFer Sam Rice, appear on no tobacco cards. Fortunately, in 1924, a Cuban tobacco company produced a set of 136 cards of American pitchers, many of whom appear on few or no other cards. Below are pics of the 1924 Diaz cards (N258 per the ACC) in my collection. I'll pay or trade strong for any Diaz cards of Senators that I don't have - the following are known to exist (there may be others): #110 Paul Zahnizer, #131 George Mogridge & #??? Fred Marberry. I'm also interested in upgrades for my poor-condition cards.

I purchased a find of nearly 100 raw T204 Ramly's about 8 years ago and this was one of the cards which was mixed in the hoard.



T206 HOF portraits have long been my main focus. I'm a stickler for proper image registration and color. Here are a few.





I started a T205 HOF run about a year ago due to the amazing colors that the cards display. It truly is an amazing set!

I probably have fewer than a dozen T-cards but I'll throw my hat in the ring. One of my favorite cards is the 1909 Johnson, took a long time to find a card that fit my idea of a perfect T206 Johnson. I also like the near perfect registration on the Speaker. The T217's Mono's are a favorite too.

A few additional 1924 Senators appeared on tobacco cards. Some of my favorites are shown below:

Walter Johnson - After losing his 2 starts in Games 1 and 5 against the powerful NY Giants, he was the winning pitcher in relief in the 12th inning of Game 7 after pitching 4 shutout innings.

Clark Griffith - I include Griffith in my collection because he was the GM and majority owner of the 1924 Senators.

George Mogridge - One of the unsung heroes of the 1924 WS, 35-year-old Mogridge started Game 4, pitched 7.1 innings giving up 2 earned runs, and was the winning pitcher. This is the only WS game the Senators won at NY. In Game 7, manager Bucky "The Boy Wonder" Harris started righty Warren "Curly" Ogden to get John McGrew to start his left-hitting lineup; after a strike out and a walk, Harris brought in lefty Mogridge who pitched 4.2 innings, holding the Giants to 1 earned run.

Roger Peckinpaugh - The Senators' shortstop had a 17-year MLB career, mostly with the NY Yankees. He was named the AL MVP for 1925. He managed the Cleveland Indians for several years after his playing career ended. The following is taken from SABR's bio of Peckinpaugh:
"The veteran shortstop teamed with the young second baseman Bucky Harris to form one of the best double play combinations in the American League. Everything fell into place by the 1924 season when owner Griffith appointed Harris the manager. Harris considered Peck his assistant manager, and together they led the Senators to back-to-back pennants in 1924 and 1925. Peck was a hero of the 1924 World Series, hitting .417 and slugging .583, including a game-winning, walk-off double in Game 2. However, while running to second base (unnecessarily) on that hit, Peckinpaugh strained a muscle in his left thigh, which sidelined him for most of Game 3 and all of Games 4 and 5. But in what Shirley Povich called 'the gamest exhibition I ever saw on a baseball field,' Peckinpaugh took the field for Game 6 with his leg heavily bandaged and went 2-for-2 with a walk before re-aggravating the injury making a brilliant, game-saving defensive play in the ninth inning. Although Peckinpaugh had to sit out Game 7, he had already done more than his share to bring the Senators their first world championship."

"Oyster Joe" Martina - 1924 was Martina's only year in the majors. He had a 6 - 8 won-loss record and a 4.67 ERA with the Senators. However, he won 322 games (vs. 254 losses) during his 21 years in the minors. Martina pitched 1 scoreless inning in the 1924 WS.

William "Pinky" Hargrave - He was a back-up catcher who played very sparingly in 1924, and did not appear in the WS. He played with Minneapolis of the Am. Assn. in 1934-36, during which time his Worch Cigar cards shown below were produced. His older brother, Eugene "Bubbles" Hargrave, also was a MLB catcher.

Yes indeed, you have to love those N162's. Your Andrews is a real beauty....I think he may be the first Phillies card in color.

Also, I recall you having a great looking T206 set. Any favorites from it ?

T213-2....."Turkey" Mike Donlin is one of my favorite guys in every set of the "Deadball" era.
Had he taken his BB career more seriously, he would have been in the HOF.






T212-3......Chase is absolutely my favorite. Incidentally, here's a ? for anyone on this forum....Why were T213-3 cards cut so narrow ?

My favorite T206 Minor League guy, Frank....1905-1908, 1914-1915. Arrayed as what I refer to as the A -B C D T-brands connection.

I consider Mr. Lundgren the Elite of the "ELITE 11" group in the 150/350 Series of the T206 set. I have a sentimental attachment to his EPDG card.
It was the first tough Back in my T206 collection. I acquired this card in 1984 from our ole buddy, Barry Sloate. He was a a great source of T206's.

Lundgren (Cubs) was printed with only 3 backs. I've included here my "blue-less" printing error that was in a large T206 find of mine 14 years ago.
