Over the weekend I was visiting a dealer friend of mine who had just bought a modest vintage collection. Two really scrambled boxes that came to him via an elderly man who said he had them for quite some time. The boxes mainly consisted of P/G 50's cards...smattering of 60's with 65 being the newest...some Leaf/Bowman cards 49-52...no stars, but some were in EX condition surprisingly. But again...super hodge podge everything 49-65.
I was helping him sort and this Lou Gehrig card was mixed in with some early 50s Bowman. The randomness fit...but the card...didn't fit. Both him nor I have really any working knowledge of pre-war...assuming it even is? Considering the source, it would seem weird for a reprint or a fantasy piece, but nothing surprises me. But...it also doesn't really fit the theme of the sellers boxes. I took a front and back and said I would post here...any idea what this is? ![]() ![]() Sorry for the phone pic quality. All the cards were raw, unsorted, and nothing was in any protective card holders at all. I grabbed a random top loader and threw it in. He is expecting a verdict of fantasy card...but as said...weird place to find it.

The image is a real Gehrig card. Not a particularly rare one.
https://www.psacard.com/cardfacts/ba...3-clubs/302249 Prob is a fantasy piece. Coloring on the back seems way off. https://goldinauctions.com/1927_W560...t-LOT3687.aspx Signature prob a fake as well. Though certainly not the worse Gehrig fake I've ever seen. Last edited by Snapolit1; 08-17-2021 at 02:13 PM. |

The front shows the card is from the 1927 W560 set. However, the back scan shows the card is 99.99% fake/reprint/counterfeit. The reason is that is a common tell for an aged reprint where you see this discoloration and all of those aged lines on the card. Practically every day, you can see dozens of these aged reprints for sale of Ruth and Gehrig on ebay.

I should have added that the signature was clearly stamped on...I assumed it was part of the card...it clearly was not real in hand.
I figured it was fantasy, just a really weird place to find this card. That said though, if you had a real Gehrig card in your collection you would think you would have pulled it out to get more for your scrambled boxes. The seller made no mention of the card, we just found it.

I would catalog the card as "2019 Etsy Special."
