As we know the major TPG's have all fallen behind and while the competition is fierce, if they do a good job that can only be a benefit to the hobby.

Surprised there isn't much more buzz about this. This new venture has a ton of money behind it. Definitely not good news for SGC.

I wonder what the slab will look like?
I prefer the look of the SGC slab, maybe the sturdy nature of Beckett and the font size/flip of PSA. (No baggies please) It's a chance to hit a home run if they can capitalize on the downside of their competition.

Could someone here photoshop a Goudey Ruth for giggles. The label seems bold and takes away from the aesthetics of the card.

The green looks a lot better than the light blue, but I still think the flip is too large in relation to the card. Especially with regard to the smaller Tobacco and Caramel Cards. The card itself should command the attention... not the flip. I would actually prefer a flip that's about half that size.
More importantly, I hope they can create slabs that actually fit the card. If they use Baggies, or have cards that are slanted within the slab (like PSA), then I am out. Last edited by perezfan; 07-10-2020 at 09:41 AM. |

First, the Gretzky and Jordan slabs behind it aren’t doing the initial impression any favors. Second, the order of the info on the flip feels backwards to me. “Mickey Mantle, Topps, 1952” just sounds wrong. Third, they're gonna need to land some big fish collectors/collections to convince anyone that they’re a serious player.
As far as the green goes, personally I think any color at all on a flip detracts from the card, regardless of the TPG.

Those scales in the logo look exactly like the SGC scales.
Hopefully the people they hire will right the ship.

Note: On the Hobby Hotline podcast this morning, it was stressed the sports card designs we have seen are not the final design. We need to see what the final design is and if it appears better than what we've seen so far.

I too thought there might be more buzz here about this. They’d have bucks behind them, they are the #1 grader of comic books, and they appear serious in taking on PSA. With all the alleged shenanigans there, I’m quite excited to see someone legit enter into the card grading realm.

Same here... it's huge news! Hope they make a big splash, as the added competition would be a great thing. The common thread severely lacking among the 3 existing choices in Third Party Grading is integrity.
I'm also eager to see what their sportscard flip actually looks like. Wish they could tone it down a bit and make it smaller in relation to the card itself. That current flip is going to look gigantic sitting atop a small Tobacco or Caramel Card. Last edited by perezfan; 07-14-2020 at 05:36 PM. |

I am very excited about this as well. I feel rather good about their chances based on their experience in the other areas. I know of them through their comics, though I haven't bought any comics in years, from my experience they were fair, though I don't have anywhere near as many graded comics as I do cards because I still buy cards.
I don't care as much about the look of the header for the card as most of you do. Hey guys, I think this is a good opportunity for you to voice your concerns to them by email. Or for those of you who have the time and willingness, send them your own variation and hope they use it. Maybe they will give you a free gradings for free! Though I would like a better look as well... I am more interested in their grading fairly, consistently, with a decent turnaround and also welcome the competition to the big 3. |

One thing that hasn't been mentioned: it is going to be hard to get people to cross cards with any real value if the new service is better than the current companies at detecting alterations because nobody is going to want their stuff to go from a 7 to Authentic.

If they were too effective at identifying alterations they'd probably be sued, perhaps including by PSA.

Perhaps the PSA/SGC/BGS 7 would be instructed to cross only if it gets the same grade or better. If they crack it out & submit it that way, then that's a different story. |

I like the flip design: as an OFIT (Old Fart In Training) I appreciate the larger cleaner lettering without all the noise in the background.
The scales logo is the parent company's logo and predates SGC: as I recall, SGC was started by the parent company and then sold off, so SGC took the logo rather than the other way around. As for their prospects, it is very exciting since it is the main CU rival starting it up. I would try their service rather than waiting a year for PSA to process an order.

I hope they go with a black insert.
The look is popular. It also seems like a huge money saver. The insert has to be cheaper than different holders for different size cards.
