Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I have a question about a stamp that is on the back of a card I received about a month ago. Basically my question is does anyone know anything about it? Like who this was and why they might have stamped the back of the card? I've seen similar stamps before from other collections and have always been intrigued by them. Thanks in advance!

It was Randy Root and he had a stamp made that said "Randy Root Card Collection." It's not uncommon to see similar stamps on old cards or even handwriting of someone's name to identify ownership. This one is a little neat since it is so straightforward with saying it belonged to him and was in his collection. Sometimes you can do a little research on these people and maybe get a good idea of who they were. There are people that like to find as many as they can from one old collection and reassemble it as much as they can. Others find them interesting and will collect a variety of different stamps. Randy probably didn't have that many cards or you would be able to find others in searches. It's an interesting curiosity of card collecting history to a time where people worried less about value and more about collecting.

That is the first card I remember that actually mentions a collection...have seen countless that have stamped or handwritten indications of ownership.
Personally I prefer some good old fashioned insults on my cards, either of the player or the subsequent owner, as seen on these Zeenut backsides. Brian |

recently sold a 1959 Topps set in an album. Every pocket had a sticker with notes about the player, it was amazing.

Actually you misunderstand. Bobby Hull used to put those on his dashboard so he could find his automobile in crowded parking lots...

Well, I’m literally 92% done with my 1952 Bowman set, however Bobby Young is one of the cards I still need.
Somehow, I feel like Randy Root is trolling me from the afterlife, because he obviously had Bobby Young in his collection, and I do not. |
