I realize some folks collect the entire set, a team, portraits, backs, etc. As a newbie, I've wondered the best way for me to really get going (besides the pick up here and there of a card). I think I found my gateway. Hear me out (I'm so excited to type this up)...,,
In 1911 and 1912 the Detroit Tigers spent their spring training in my hometown in Louisiana. The ballpark is no longer there, it's now an empty field. I drove by it this weekend. So, my thought is, cross reference the roster of that 1911 team to a list of T206 subjects, and that will be my jump off point. T206 cards of players that played in my hometown. From what I have read so far, Ty Cobb did not travel to these Spring Training games, but I plan on digging up some box scores and may have to go to the local papers for that if they are available to dig deeper. So far, just a cursory check it puts me at 16 cards that are Detroit Tiger players when the cards were issued. There could be some players on the 1911 squad that were on t206s on a different team when issued. any feedback/ comments? |

That's a cool idea...there's really no wrong way to collect T206's!
Good luck!

Hi Jamie,
Good idea for a collection! I grew up near Detroit, so I've collected a lot of Tiger players. The T207 set was issued in 1912. It contains a few Tiger players who are not in T206: Bauman, Covington, Drake, Gainor, Lively and Works. Those guys are likely to be on your spring training rosters once you've located them. The T206 set was based on players from 1908-09. So quite a few players were different on the rosters by 1911-1912. I've enjoyed collecting T206's and T207's. Here's an article I found about the 1914 Tigers Spring Training in Mississippi: http://nighttraintodetroit.com/2014/...100-years-ago/ |

Always fun to see all the different angles to collecting T206. I came across this excerpt from a book to seems to document Ty Cobb travelling to Louisiana in March of 1911 with his family for spring training:

That is a nice way to collect, like said above there is no wrong way.
I done the local thing also. As part of a collection I donated to a local museum one of the cards was a T206 Bill Shipke. He played for and managed the local small town team in 1920. |

As mentioned, Ed Summers has a T206 card, which is shown below.
Jim Delahanty has a T206 card, designating him with Washington. And Jim Delehanty also has a T205 card, showing him with the Tigers. So with the T207 cards Ron mentioned, you can have a nice type collection of the three most prominent tobacco issues of the era as well, and a good chunk of the Tigers 1911 roster.
