Just picked up this card on ebay. Nice card for a fair price, but I found it's 1/16" short on the side. I don't know what is an acceptable size variation, but I was looking for some peace of mind. Any thoughts?

I have to agree, without reading any words in the initial post I thought trimmed side to side almost instantly. Don't feel bad I have a couple of high grade 1933 Goudeys in PSA holders that I pulled from my auction because they are trimmed.

It certainly looks narrow, but I will say in my experience that 1/16” is within tolerance of Goudeys. I’ve seen some original collections with cards all over the place as far as dimensions go. If that is trimmed, whoever did it did one hell of a job aging the new edge from what I can see.

I figured if it had been trimmed, it was done awhile ago. If I sent it to get graded, would it come back trimmed?

Put the trimmed edge on a flat surface to see if any waves in the cut, next would be a black light to check the suspected edge of the card to the rest of the card edges just my 2 cents

Great idea! I just put it under a black light, and all sides seem consistent, and the edges are straight. So nothing stands out. Would the grading companies call it trimmed just because of the sides being 1/16" off?

Even if it gets a numerical grade, it will unfortunately always be questioned....but given what I see, I would disagree with anyone who insisted that there is evidence of trimming there.

It was an estate situation where the consignor doesn't care at all about cards. I have to go back to her and explain the situation. Don't know exactly what we're going to do. Even selling them with disclosure is just encouraging shenanigans somewhere down the line.

Thanks to everyone for your great opinions and advice. I'm going to return it, but realize there is a decent chance it wasn't trimmed, just short. Good karma credits for everyone!

It sure is a pretty sweet card, regardless. It's certainly well printed, clean and pushing 90 years old! Aren't raw Goudey's sweet!?!?

My question to myself is what advantage would there be to trim that card?
Not like it became razor sharp after a shave. Still a 4 or at best a 5? |

Some people trimmed cards narrower years ago to fit them into 9-pocket pages or toploaders they had on hand. Not all trimming is to improve the condition for grading.

The top left corner I'll say is certainly trimmed. The upper border is the same size all the way to just above the R of frank. Then it's slightly narrower.
The picture of the edge also looks slightly shaved, ok near the upper corner, but looks wrong starting a bit below that. |

The return was accepted, so I'm sending it out tomorrow. Oh well. Next time I'll scrutinize the borders a little more.
