Something very Buyers Club (if you believed in that thing) is going on right now.
Take a look at completed listings for your Mark McGwire 1985 PSA9s, 1990 Frank Thomas Leaf PSA 10s, 1989 Griffey UD PSA 9s.... Ever since the pandemic took hold, things have gotten completely bonkers. Not sure what to think other than I'd be very hesitant to be buying cards like this with absolutely no scarcity. I've been wrong before, but this feels particularly unsustainable. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...&LH_Complete=1 https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...t=nc&LH_Sold=1 |

A few years ago I sent in a submission to PSA with 5 1985 McGwires and 5 1989 Griffy Jr's got back 8 of the 10 were PSA 8 and 2 PSA 9. I was not happy. This week I sold so far 4 if those cards $85 each .
I also raised the price I had on a Sosa Gamer and it sold. The reason being the ESPN 30/30 special in the Mcgwire and Sosa HR race in 1998. Of course I could be wrong and these things keep running up. ..See Mike trout 2011 update PSA 10. People thought a Thousand was alot... now $3,000.00!! And his red 5/5 2009 auto over $350k plus juice!! I could understand these jumps if it was after he hit HR 500 or hit number 3k but he has a way to go. I for one hope he continues to slug his way into the record books. But Mcgwire And Sosa borh had extraordinary careers but chose a different path than the one Mike Trout is on. But maybe Mac and Sosa become the Blacksox of our generation and future collectors treat their cards like we treat shoeless Joe's. Sorry for being all over.. |

Bought these for a song a few years ago. Hard to believe the heights to which their prices have climbed.

I am wondering if this is going to spill over to Football Cards soon. I should jump on the Bret Farve Stadium Club Rookie. I probably waited too long already.

And now the 86 Donruss Canseco Rated Rookie is a $600 card in PSA10. Okay.

Yes, they were issued that way. Maddeningly hard to find them in top shape these days. Many of those sets have logged some serious mileage as dealers took them to shows multiple times over the past 34 years.

I think I have an unopened 1986 Donruss wax box. I should probably go find it and sell it while the price is high, huh?

That's funny...just last week I opened a 1986 Donruss set from those cello style bricks to put into a binder. Thankfully the brick that held the Conseco was unharmed...BUT...I had two bricks where there was a small crease at the bottom of the cards, all the way through!!! I was shocked. Then I also did the same to a 88 Donruss set (wow, terribly awful set, but full of memories) and I had THREE bricks where the cards were slightly creased. Turned a 5 dollar set into worthless! Haha. My Greg Jefferies was unharmed...) What were they thinking with those cello bricks? Terrible, and time is not serving them well...

Up here, I have more times than not lately heard the talk of collector/sports cards on T.V. and on the radio.
Just the other day I heard my local rock and roll radio station talking about a signed Jordan RC that was currently nearing a half million dollars. I am still unfamiliar with that auction/card nor do I know if it is over, but, imo, this brings new people into the card collecting world and creates a buying frenzy. I am not saying that is what is currently going on with regards to that $600 dollar Donruss Conseco RC, but it could be a possibility?

There is no question it is an iconic card for a generation of collectors but $600 is madness. $100 feels about right.

I’d just be afraid of returns once the bottom falls out. I have stacks of this stuff and would not sell at these prices unless they stick for a minimum of a year.

Sell 'em now and in quantity and it will cut the risks of returns. What's the downside, you have to take some back? You end up back where you were. What have you lost? Nothing

I started to look for a 1983 Topps Gwynn earlier this year and then life got in the way, so I never purchased. A PSA 9 had been around $50 for YEARS!!! I just took a look and the last few sales are around $150++. That makes absolutely no sense. Something strange is going on. That is for sure. I can't imagine that many people decided to start collecting graded cards in the past 1-2 months and decided to throw caution to the wind and just pay $100 more than going rate just because they felt like it. Or maybe they did....

Wow I wanted a McGwire RC signed. Some were going for $99 but I figured what the heck I’d go a little more with the PSA 9 included. They were around $50 when I made the plunge.
