Can be either Pre-war or Post war. What's are the sets your working on that have little general appeal outside of your world? Usually this means it's hard to find the cards you need since no one else is collecting it.
I'm working a couple: Pre-War 1945 Caramelo Deportivo (just need the three big Negro League stars and the short print). I can find them, but the prices are crazy high Post War 1977 Hostess Twinkies - the single card black bar set. I'm working a master set for all the product versions numbering 276 cards. This is crazy tough as it's full of short prints and no one else is collecting it so they never show up for sale. I still need 15 of them. |

1985 Subway Discs. ETA, they are mysterious. They are blank backed with no company name on them, they were discovered years later in a warehouse, the complete set checklist and the total of color variations are both unknown and are updated as new discoveries are made. I would have also included a master set of 1979 Kellogg’s with all 158 variations but I completed it a few years ago.

Not working on any weird ones currently, but the oddest PreWar2 set that I have worked on is the W9316 strip card issue. These cards normally make people sick to their stomachs.

1968 Atlantic Oil. I have the base set of 40, the Swoboda variation, and the instant winner card, but there are 10 SSPs that were prize-winning tickets for cash money. I have two. I assume I will never finish since the Agee (grand prize winner) and Banks ($100 prize winner) are likely never to be found. I did luck into the Davis ($100 prize winner), though, so there may be a Banks out there.
1960 Los Angeles Examiner Lakers.

I've built a lot of sets over the years, but this has been one of the trickier ones. Some are common, but I've been looking for years for the last one I need..."The score is tied..."

Working on the 1921 Universal Toy & Novelty Co. strip sets, which include a portion of W516-1 baseball, boxing, and several non-sport subjects. Here's an example of how the text overlaps in two different ways for the baseball strips.

I am not really going for the set per se, but they are part of some player master sets that I am working on.
Gumball sized cards that were in strips of 13 with many HOF players of both contemporary 1950 times as well as back to early years (Cobb, Ruth, etc.)

(In serious, I thought the 1921 Universal set would at least be "normal" strip cards without reversed images seen in so many other strip sets to worry about -- and then a friend sent me their Boy Scouts card with reverse-printed Universal © text on the top. So at least one reversed strip made it out of the factory! TBD if any others exist.)

They are all w516-1; similar to w515-1 and w515-2. Many of the cards will not have lettering at the top. W516-1 has several paper variations, however the universal cards will be more brown than white. The toughest w516 cards are the w516-1-2; paper is very white like e121s. Grading companies label w516 variations incorrectly more often than not. I have a lot of these and refer to them this way W516-1: white or tan paper varon cards 1-10, mostly tan 11-30, easiest W516-2: universal w516-1s, also includes the school version W516-3: currently recognized as w516-1-2, toughest in my experience W516-4: currently w516-2-1 W516-5: w516-2-2, 2nd easiest, except the cicotte no number var W516-6: w516-2-3, 2nd toughest Edited to add W516-7: from the poster, unnumbered; i have only George Burns Big heads are not part of the w516 set, nor are the boxing big heads part of the w529 set imo. Maybe related to w9316, though I'd have to check my notes to remember why. Last edited by Clutch-Hitter; 05-07-2020 at 09:56 PM. |

I don't think that he would have caught many balls out there... so you guessed right.... the only place that he could probably play is the 1B (which it does say on the card by the way)... In the 4 games he played against the World Champ A's, he batted .400 (6/15) and had 3 runs scored. Not bad for the "big man"!

Yeah... it has been a 15 year grind and I am "only 70 percent done".... only one card in the set has more than two graded copies available.... the juan viola which has 3 total copies.... so it is a rare event that I find a "new one" to add to the set....

The most obscure set that I am working on is the E210-2 York Caramels (type 2) I love these cards. (I do have the full Type-1 version)
I haven't been searching very much for them lately, but I do have 54/60. Not bad ![]() The ODDEST thing I am working on is my existing 17 full sets of 1971 Topps Football. I have 21 more "mostly complete" sets in binders too. A few more low grade Bradshaw RC's to go. So that's 38 sets and I have a couple thousand more to put in the sheets some day. ![]()
