So both lots I was interested in went out past my budget. Hopefully, you all had better luck than myself. Kudos to REA for the terrific auction.
If anyone picked up lot #90 or #91, please let me know if you're interested in parting with any of the Des Moines or Sioux City cards. Thanks and Goodnight Craig

The economy seems to be thriving in sports cards and memorabilia - Wow! Not just REA, but I think 4-5 auctions over the past few weeks.

Yep... I've noticed the same thing in a big way. Cards and memorabilia might be the last segment to take a hit from this covid craziness.

I guess I'll be the first to post some winnings. Both in the category of cards I never thought I'd own. The McGraw is the oversized premium Ferguson pennant, not the little BF2.

I won a couple of lots. Got one for an entirely reasonable price and the other for at least twice what I expected I'd have to pay for it. I thought for sure I was the only Whitey Glazner collector.

One of the auction results that really jumped out at me was the '61-62 autographed Wilt Chamberlain card. I know there at several collectors trying to put together an autographed set of the '61-62 Fleers, but $33,000+ for the Wilt card seemed really strong to me. https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...e?itemid=66883

The price for the Wilt was very surprising! That might be the most I can recall ever seeing for any vintage signed Basketball card.

My thoughts on the items I was watching/bidding on
1) 1933 Bismarck Team-Signed Postcard with Satchel Paige PSA/DNA NM-MT 8 - The 1933 Bismarck Churchills signed postcard was nice and fit my integration collection, but that team only had a couple of big names (Paige being the key one) so I passed, even though it's one of the earliest Paige autographs I have ever seen. Ended up passing on it. Sold for $975 + Premium (and shipping and tax), so prob around $1400 all in. 2) 1940-1941 Pedro "Perucho" Cepeda Signed Guayama Puerto Rican League Contract - I sold this a year or two ago and it went for $1100 + Premium then. Would have loved to have gotten it back if it stayed really cheap. Ended up $700 + Premium. Solid price, but wasn't low enough for me to keep bidding on. 3) 1945-1946 Cienfuegos Original Photograph with Martin Dihigo - PSA/DNA Type I - I noticed this had only 1 bid (for $200) at a few minutes to 6, so I went in. It's a beautiful image in great shape. A much worse condition copy sold at Hakes for $800+ (with the juice). Bidding got up to $550 on it early in extended bidding and I planned on bidding in the overtime. Ended up looking myself in the mirror and reminding myself that it doesn't really fit the PC super well, and so even though I think it was a very solid deal at $550 + Premium (or even at $600 or higher, as it was still below what a much, much worse condition copy sold for at Hakes), I ended up leaving it. Sorry to the buyer who paid much more than had I stayed away, but I believe they still got a very nice price. 4) 1933 Cleveland Indians and Philadelphia A's Lineup Cards Signed by Walter Johnson and Connie Mack - The only items I won. Price was definitely not low ($1250 + premium etc) but it's the oldest pair of lineup cards (meaning both teams from the same game) I've ever seen in years of collecting and researching them. It featured manager's Walter Johnson against Connie Mack, two of the most significant names in the game (albeit Johnson for his play.) In rare fashion, Mack signed his whole name (first and last rather than just last). The date wasn't listed, but wasn't terribly hard to determine (Aug 17, 1933). In the game, HOF Earl Averill hit for the cycle. HOF's Jimmie Foxx and Mickey Cochrane were in the lineup for the A's as well. Monte Pearson, who was on the mound for Cleveland, actually lead the league in ERA that season. The A's lineup is someone faded which isn't great, but the Indians is super sharp with Johnson's signature looking really sharp. And the Averill's cycle was the 104th in baseball history. (There still have only ever been 330. (It's only slughtly more common than the 303 no-hitters in baseball history). And the A's pitcher that day had a great name/nickname: (Merritt Patrick) "Sugar" Cain" |

The REA auction had a lot of great items unfortunately not enough resources for them all.
Happy to get this Joe Jackson |

Tim Murnane day for me. The 1877 Boston composite cabinet with Tim Murnane, and WaJo's personal photo from the Tim Murnane tribute game with the lineup written out by Johnson personally.

ok - i'll play...guess i'm in the way shallow end (especially after Hotchkiss, good grief man!) but i'm pretty pleased with these.
![]() ![]() ![]() For Wajo portraits, if you want something OTHER than Piedmont or Sweet Cap, this is really the only reasonable thing to find; eye appeal is pretty good, and with the "common backs" getting $1200-1300 normally, the back premium on this seemed pretty reasonable. For Matty, it was this SC150/30 or the PSA 4 Piedmont 150. 20% off the PSA seemed like a good place to be. On Young, similar to Wajo, if you want something else Sovereign is about it. And of those, 150s are twice as hard (?) to find then 350s? At $1400-1500 for the common back 2.5s, again back premium seemed pretty reasonable. |

I was the underbidder on the Ruth/Cobb/Collins type 1 photo - couldn't bring myself last night to pay up and just overpay; huge regrets this morning.
Thrilled to see the '39 signed Williams sell for that - great card |

Nice cards, everyone. I enjoyed this closing style for REA. I picked up a couple, but this is my favorite.
(Edited to add: it's a shame there's so much compression on uploaded jpgs...the full picture is much nicer: https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...e?itemid=65212) Last edited by brass_rat; 04-20-2020 at 12:12 PM. Reason: commentary on jpg compression |
