Help with Another Pin? (Stan the Man Retirement)

Hi All-

I have another Pin Back I have some questions on - FWIW, it came from the same source/collection as THIS ONE I asked about a few months ago.

I was cleaning up some drawers and was going to "lot it up" to sell / make space but noticed the back is much different than everything listed / sold (seems they are all just "regular / Stainless Steel / non-colored backs", whereas this one is not). It does measure roughly 3.5 inches like the ones listed though.

I know small variations / intricacies can cause significant differences when it comes to Pins, so just wanted to see if anyone was knowledgeable on these and whether or not if this is a rarer version? Or potentially a reproduction? (I doubt its a repo considering where it came from, but want to check) Or am I just looking too deep and its just a standard kind of common pin?

Check post #1784 in the Any One Collect Pins? thread. That back is not unheard of but I have maybe 200 3-3.5” pins and none have that back.

Nice, kind of along the lines of what I was thinking (more or less common pin but "rare back"). Thank you!

It’s a rare back but I’m not sure it adds value. Maybe to a hard core Musial collector?

I hear ya, we're on the same page - my assumption was that but that it would also help the liquidity at/around comps so was going to the list pile rather than the dump lot! Thanks!

Stefan that pin has been repro a ton. The one you have with the cream or tan back is a real one made in 1963.. The silver or aluminum back looking ones are reproductions.

Not doubting your expertise on this, but why would anyone go to the trouble and expense of making repros of a large pin that has never been worth much, isn't worth much today, and never will be worth much? Also, I'm not sure I've ever seen the cream back on any other pin of any kind, so I'm not sure that can be seen as a differentiator. In any case, interesting situation no matter what the truth is.

I can't speak to why someone would remake the Musial pin, but here is my Giants pin with the same back. I think the rusted one had the white back originally. The construction is identical. It just got exposed to the elements.

Hank many pins have been reproed thru the years there are at least 2 musials that were. I collected pins for over 45 years and have dealt a ton with that musial pin... the silver or aluminum backs are repro.. Here are a few more that are and have been reproed.. Mantle brewer the most! Note the 3 different color uses on the mantle day pin.. You might want to ask PINZPLUS on ebay how many pins he has reproed...

Even though I don’t collect Cardinals or Musial, I always suspected that was a heavily reproduced pin because I see it a lot. How about the “Spahnie” pin I see a lot? I will say, I don’t think the 3” or 3.5” repros come from pinzplus because I think he only has 1,75” and 2.25” capabilities.

I, too, have seen many of the big Musials and Spahnies over the years, and just figured they didn't get the crowds they were anticipating and were left with a lot of them, or some such. To me, the difference between those and the Mantles, and the Ted Williams smaller pin, for example, is that you could actually make some money reproing them, but the Musial and Spahn not so much. Just seems like if you're going to repro something, why large, expensive-to-make pins for which there is almost no demand? Doesn't make sense to me. Could they just have been made by different manufacturers for different purposes, perhaps, with the white back the "real one" from the game day and all the others sold outside for the rest of the season, or in stores?

FWIW - Couldn't find another one anywhere, so just went ahead and listed it; my personal assumption is the current sole watcher is a likely bidder/winner at minimum if they don't forget in between day 7 and 10 (of which there's probably a 50/50 chance), but we shall see:
