Investment Opinions on t206...

I'm curious to get opinions from anyone that would like to weigh in...

If you had $2,000 to invest on a t206 and you were looking at it specifically from a future price appreciation standpoint, what would invest your $2,000 in?

1) a beater with a rare back like Uzit

2) a premier card like a Cobb Red Portrait in graded condition 1-1.5

3) a common graded PSA 8

Don't know if you can still get into a Mathewson White Cap in EX5, but tough card in that grade and undervalued imo. Good luck with your choice.

I think a numerically graded Uzit is as good an investment as a low-grade Cobb.

I think a common in an 8 is NOT as good a choice as the other two options

Cobb, Cy Young, Mathewson. Any of them.

Best option out of the 3 you've presented in my mind would be a Premier HOF'er in as high a grade as your $2k will buy.
I would not focus on Cobb at that price point, but rather Matty/Young/Johnson, maybe Speaker, for much better value.

But if you're looking at this from an investment standpoint, it feels like we are at a recent crest of pricing with a lot of interest in T206, and so not a great time to do so.
Some of the run up in prices has been pretty exuberant...

I would suggest that there is much greater upside value in T-cards *outside* of the T206 set at the moment.

Cobb. His cards have been desired since their issue in 1909. Uzit backs have been en vogue for a fraction of that time.

Personally, I think it is going to be dependent on your risk tolerance. I see the Cobb as being a sure maintain/increase, but I can see more potential upside (and also risk of a downside) with a rare back, especially if you can get a lower level HOFer with a clean back.

I would stay far away from a really high grade common at this point.

What makes Cobb a bad choice? I haven't been paying less for his cards over time.

I totally agree with this entire post from my recent collecting experience. I actually decided on saving more to buy a better graded Cobb than what 2gs would get me. Buy a nice HOF card with great eye appeal in the 4-5 grade range that’s a superior example for the grade.

Cobb but not a red portrait. Too many of them. Bat off or bat on. My choice would be a nice bat off in 1.5 or 2. They can be had for 2k.

From your list, a red Cobb would be the easiest to quickly get your money back. With $2000, I would probably buy 100 raw commons...Rob

Higher second tier player portrait with a difficult back in say a psa 5 (anything higher and it's probably trimmed), something like a Chesbro (only one pose) in PSA 5 with one of his more difficult backs.

As others have mentioned - definitely NOT the high grade common. I'm with most - out of the 3 options you posted - the Cobb. I'm also with a couple who suggested a different Hall of famer like CY Young, Walter Johnson in a better grade with great eye appeal.

I would go with a high grade tier 2 HOF like Speaker, Evers, Tinker, Lajoie, etc.

I don't know how other regions of the country faired during the recession, but Eastern WA got nailed on the sports card hobby. Eastern WA does not demand the prices that a place like Seattle can bring in. When the recession hit, it was very difficult for LCS. The above advice is solid advice. Sometimes investments don't do what we expect (increase in value). I happen to like collecting Wheaties backs. But I can remember a time when Wheaties backs were much more popular than they are right now - even in this hot market.

I can remember a time when collecting was a fun hobby and these pieces of cardboard weren't looked at as investments.

It's sad that the following generations will never experience what it was like to "collect" for the fun of it.

That said, I'd probably pass right now on "investing" in cards. I'd buy something because I LIKE IT.
