T206: Show us your "Marks"

I used to automatically write-off any card which had any writing/marking on it. However, I was drawn to this card for just that. Please share any T206's you have with any interesting or unique writing/marking. Thanks.

I noticed that purple star on your T206. Is this star on my T205 Wagner possibly from the same, one time owner? Any one else have more to share?

I also have a T206 (Bender with trees) that has the Nelson Tisdel stamp on the back. Mine also has his sig on the back border and had been glued, but still had the backing on it. Got that off and was at first disappointed to find the stamp, but then googled the name.

Some info I found was someone with the same name came to the US with his family in the early 1900s (1906/7? - I've lost the geneaology web site link) and grew up in Missouri. Graduated from the University of Missouri in 1920 and married in 1925. Got most of that from a few google searches. There's a site that has his 1920 yearbook with class picture.

It's now my favorite T206 card. I picture a kid just coming to the US, learning about baseball and collecting T206 cards. I've seen others on ebay for sale over the years. I thought it was kinda fun to put a story together to go with the stamp. Might not be the same kid, but I'd rather not ruin my mind's picture of the story.

Always wondered why these comments weren't on a T206 Snodgrass Catching pose card. I have always presumed that the autograph seeker either included one with this one, or otherwise asked about his catching days.

Great research and story, Tim. I did some similar research on a T206 Speaker with an Everett Campbell stamp on the reverse. Now I'm trying to track down the person I sold it to, as it was my favorite card (I believe I sold it to a N54 member.)

I've seen at least 10 of those purple stars on T206's over the years. I'd say it was somebody's identication mark.

Being a low to mid condition collector I have had the opportunity to come across some interesting T206 with stamps. I like the fancy script letter on the Turner card--is that an 'F' ? The Piedmont 350-460 series Lake card has the March 10 1911 stamp...perhaps when it was first acquired? As far as I can tell the Overall was first Milton Fuegy's card until his older brother George Fuegy swiped it from him. And I don't know much about the Cobb player of the Troit team, except that its previous owner thought he was 'O.K.'

Thanks T206 Collector. Now I know my English Literature degree was not for naught...it allowed me to unconsciously gravitate to a card that may have at one time been owned by the creator of the Great Gatsby.

This is the second card I've bought this year, but the first to arrive.



I'm trying to rebuild McCormick's collection of all the t206s he stamped as a kid. This is #170 in the rebuild, #171 should arrive tomorrow. That leaves 28 cards I know exist with his stamp on them (and I know the owners of 11 of those. Eventually, you'll all hear from me) and who knows how many more that will just show up in auctions, eBay, etc. A never ending quest.

Shown before but.........I bought this from a board member many years ago on ebay. I thought the writing was just stray marks and tried erasing it. I couldn't because it's from one of those oil based pencils from long ago.....I guess it's good I didn't

New to forum so I just read your original thread about the McCormick backs. Now that's a very unique and hard to find collection. I looked at my few T206 backs as a couple had stamps, but no McCormicks. Good luck in your hunt.

I think there are probably many more than 10. I have 2 in a total collection of only about 60.

I went through my old scans from 2005-2008 as I remembered I had some. I found that I at one point owned 44 different F.F.Baker stamped T206s. Kind of wish I had them back. Amongst other commons, there was Bresnahan Portrait, Chesbro, Cicotte, Griffith Portrait, and Thornton.

I also found the following, two of what appears to be from Harold Meixell (one of which he initialed twice):

Mark has the two that he got from Jim Schnider when he was selling off the near complete T206 set he got from Mastro a couple of years ago. Jim R. just recently picked up another that I was the under-bidder on on eBay about a week ago, which means he has two. I'm not in any hurry. Eventually, replacements will be found, and I can get them. I'm just happy to know where they are....

Families find ways to work out these types of things.

Eric, I own the Chesbro and Griffith portraits plus Mattern portrait and Engle batting. One clearly lists his address as 1318 Mosby St. So far only one that has a 150 Piedmont stamp has surfaced. ( I'm sure that can be easily dispelled with all the collectors here). All the rest seen are 350 or 350-460 series Piedmont. Now here is where my memory gets a bit fuzzy as I did the research 5 years ago and had a memory back then. He either lived in Portland or Seattle and was 12 years old in 1911. My thoughts are someone in the family smoked piedmonts, young F.F. saw the Chesbro 150 in a box on dad's dresser from 1909 and got the bug and started saving by the time the 350's were printed. Pack or 2 a day habit and young F.F. amassed a couple hundred quickly. Maybe stamping them so buddy's could get together and admire each others collections without mixing them up. Of course I have no way of proving this but that's the story I like to believe when I look at them. I believe there are 100's of his cards out there. He did live a long life so I don't think he was the one puffing away on the cancer sticks.

Look at item 380304525018 on ebay. The writing looks similar to that which is on your card. I looked at the cert numbers for your card and this (Cravath) card and it appears that they did come from the same collection. I don't mind this type of writing, it adds a little character to the card (IMO).

I have scans of seven P150s: Chesbro, Cicotte, Hahn, Shaw, Jacklitsch, Overall (portrait) and Stone. I also have an Old Mill Fiene scan that appears to have a partial baker stamp.

A quick google search only comes up with only one 1318 mosby street (Richmond VA)... How did you determine west coast?

Eric, Well that shoots the 150 theory down the drain. Honestly, I cannot remember why I thought West Coast. Like I said, my memory at this time is not what it was 5 years ago. I know I tracked him down and wish I would have wrote it all down. It's interesting to see you have a non Piedmont. Maybe he did a little swapping? I'm more than happy to be proved wrong about F.F. As a matter of fact, I'd be really happy to know the whole truth. I find his collection fascinating as our other collector finds the McCormick just as interesting. Anything anyone can add I'm all ears.

I do like such cards and find interesting--they give you, your imagination, a tangible connection with the past--but I don't over-value/collect them, per se [I'd trade any of these reasonably; pm me if interested]. I've accumulated most of these simply because they were affordable.

I have several more starred 206's, and quite a few more that have been written on, some neatly, some scribbled, but I like these best. My favorites are the "32" and the pair of B.B. Gannons [I take it that's a G].
