Can anyone help identify this item? Looks like maybe a team issue photo but I cannot find anything to identify it. Thanks

Looks more like a candid taken by a fan. Maybe they took a bunch of photos that day, which could explain the 11.

The pic is taken from on the field. Doubtful someone would have that access. It is a great action pic The writing on back is "typed" leaning me to believe a production set. I'm thinking a team set of some sort, or a promo for a barnstorming trip. Last edited by wondo; 12-18-2019 at 08:12 AM. |

I feel like a team issue or a promo issue would want to identify Gehrig on the front, no?

Seen an awful lot of gehrig stuff over the years. . .and haven't seen that.
I'd say staged and not a true action shot. Fact that it's in a screw down raises my suspicions immediately it is some fantasy piece but certain don't know that for sure. Last edited by Snapolit1; 12-18-2019 at 08:04 AM. |

Odd indeed. I’m thinking fantasy too. The number leads you to believe it’s part of a set and that there are at least 10 others out there, none or which I have seen. I also agree the screw down is suspect too, for some reason.
What also strikes me is that it appears that the infield is actually behind him, which would mean he’s facing foul territory?

shadow seems off to me (along with other factors mentioned) the shadow from his foot on the bag, would indicate the sun is directly behind him (or nearly) but if that were the case, his arms wouldn't leave a shadow with a hole in between them.

The cracking/aging strikes me as odd. . . . not something I've seen in (m)any old photos. I've seen photos from the 1880s that don't look nearly as old.

There is no cracking. I removed it from the holder and took another picture added here.

Close guess. So that's a team issue of some kind?

I love how quickly many of you jump on the bandwagon to discredit an item, any item that shows up on this site. "Weird cracking", "deceptive numbering", "shadows are off", "in a screw-down". Ugh.
Awesome, AWESOME snapshot photo of Gehrig there, sir. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad that Andrew was able to track that down for you!

I'll take a lap, happily. Glad it's authentic. Happy to see something I'd previously not. And still rather confused about the shadow. But awesome. |

Not a team issue but so what? It is a nice image from some sort of vintage set. I'd be pleased to own it. Here's one I have from the set:
![]() Does anyone have a scan of the backs of these photos so I can ID the player? FWIW, pro photographers who had field access did produce snapshots back in the day for sale to the public. I have a smattering of snaps that are clearly shot professionally. Here's a Burke of Hartnett: ![]()

These are Thorne prints. He photographed the team in St. Pete from the late 1920 until about 1940. He also photographed the Boston Braves. You usually see his photos in 8x10 format with a Thorne stamp and a place for the player's name on the reverse. He took a very sharp, posed photo. The poses were predictable. He also took team photos of the Yanks and Braves.
I've seen these smaller photos from time-to-time and own a few. The 8x10's are nicer items. Thorne seems to have been unofficially replaced in Florida by Wm. Greene, the NYC photographer who took over for Charles Conlon at the Evening Telegram. Greene took a beautiful photograph, by the way. lumberjack |
