I have been a collector of Gabby Hartnett for a number of years and have slowly been assembling a set of his Exhibit cards. I have run into a questions on his 1925-31 Postcard backed exhibits. I know that there is the photo background and the extremely rare silhouette version of this card, but my questions is if there is a red printing variation of the photo background cards? I have been able to obtain the Green, Yellow and B&W versions for my collection, but have yet to ever see a Red color variation, just wondering if any of the more experienced Exhibit collectors know if the Red color printing extended to the entire checklist of cards or if it was only used on certain cards? Adam's book as great as it is, unfortunately shed no light on this question on how the color variations were applied to this set.
Since all new posts should have cards pictured in them, here are the three color variations of the 1925-31 Hartnett postcard back that I have in my collection. |

I can't confirm red on Hartnett. I know that red was used in the set but it is one of the scarcer (if not the scarcest) colors.
I think somone (Lyman Hardeman of Old Cardboard?) had a big run of Hartnett colors.

Thanks for the info Adam, looks like the Hartnett was printed in pretty much every available color, even some that I was un aware of existing!

Whoa - that Lew Lipset lot of Hartnetts is so cool!
Here's my color run of Chuck Klein...if anyone has a color I don't have, I'd love to know about it (or better yet, trade for/acquire it)! I have my Klein run listed as: (1) Black & White, (2) Blue, (3) Green, (4) Sepia, (5) Light Green, (6) Purple, (7) Red, (8) Brown, and (9) Bluish Grey. I think my scanner was "funky" with the red one as it is a little more red than it is auburn, as displayed below. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's the Green/Blue tint that I don't (yet) own: ![]() I think there should be a yellow tint out there somewhere, but I don't recall ever seeing one. Rascal, good luck with your Hartnett run. I remember seeing a nifty Lefty Grove color run a few years back as well...

Those Kleins are awesome. Steely eyed, staring straight at the camera, serious as a heart attack. Great picture and great cards.

After getting a group of these I did some research as well and some colors are harder to find. It was too bad that PSA and SGC did not track the colors for each player. Either way there are some really low populations for these exhibit postcards and I also used Adam's info which was very helpful.
When I noticed this post was about the Hartnett - I thought it might be about the exhibit postcard I just sold you Steve - it will be mailed on Wed. This is a very interesting set - been buying and selling for 20+ years and never had the colored issues - only the black and white. Happy Collecting! Jimmy

THOSE KLEINS ARE SWEET!!!
I did buy a handful of Exhibits from Lew years ago, I wish now that I had been collecting Gabby at the time, my search would have been pretty simple, and at that price knowing how rare they are now a steal in the condition they were represented! Jimmy, I'm glad we were able to get a deal worked out on the Yellow Hartnett, I've been trying to pick up some other colors for a while now, they just don't turn up for sale very often. |

That Klein run is great. Note that the third one is actually different from all of the others because it was printed in green ink on green stock. The rest are printed on white stock with color ink.

I love these postcard-back exhibit cards. Here are my Lefty Grove color variations. I have posted them in the past. Always looking for new colors including red and bright green.
