I’m trying to see if this 1916 sporting news Ruth is real or fake. I’ve checked out the old thread on this and it seems to meet the criteria as authentic, however I’m not 100% sure. I’ll be checking it out in person tomorrow and I was planning on checking the dot pattern and all that but wanted other input.

Why would it be in that holder if real?

The holder screams "fake", and the card itself doesn't look good either, just at a glance. The wear on the corners is the kind you see when someone is trying to make a card look old, not the kind that old cards actually have.

Screams "fake" to me from that scan. The corners are rounded, with a little white showing but NO fraying? And no, it wouldn't be in that holder if real. It could be the 1 in a million, but I doubt it.

Yeah I get the holder doesn’t bode well for it, however it’s the card id be looking at not the holder. Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve seen high dollar card in crap holders. The card belongs to my cousin and was passed down to him by his great uncle. The holder has me for a loop as well however I know theirs been plenty of fly by night “grading companies” that haven’t lasted. I’m leaning towards fake as well but wanted to put it up and see what everyone else thought. As far as the rounded corners go I don’t think it would be completely out of the question for someone to trim the corners lol. As if legit cards have never had rounded trimmed corners sorry for the sarcasm but couldn’t resist. I appreciate all the feedback tho

I actually got a real Nielsen's type 2 Cobb in a goofball holder once. However I don't like this card.

It does look off. I say bust it out of its holder (the holder obviously doesn't add any value) and provide us with a better image, front and back, so we can better judge the card.

Yeah when he brings the card over to me tomorrow I was planning on busting it out of the case to check the print and all that on it so I’ll post some more up then as well. Like I said I’m leaning towards fake as well but wanted to see what the masses thought so to speak. Again much appreciated for the feedback

As for the OPs card, I have to say fake as well. The white at the corners shows the actual paper stock color under the printed on aged color. Fake too.

It looks suspiciously like the one, with the same SN reverse, brought into Pawn Stars by some jerk a few years back to sell. After a rambling 10 minute semi-incoherent mumble about the Babe, Rick did his usual thing and said he wanted to call in an expert. Well, the expert arrived and in about 30 seconds dismissed it as a reprint or bogus. Under the bright lights of the camera you could see it was shiny and looked of poor quality cardboard.

Looks the same as this fake being sold on Etsy for $2.75, but with different rounding of the corners. See the bottom border and the left border by Babe’s head.

Hey guys sorry I didn’t post yesterday with updates. There is no need to post pics outside the case, as soon as I pulled the card out I could tell just from the feel it was fake. Surface was slick and smooth and the card under black light shined just like a modern card. Thanks for all the input tho.

Dang it, so its not real. Ive never seen a holder without a company name on it. All I was gonna ask for, is to get one of those purple stickers on it to make me feel comfortable.

How about the fact that the holder doesn't display "M-101-5 (or-4)" on it?!?

I just thought it funny that the "card" graded poor. Fake it is, but nowhere near poor. What was to be gained by that--to show that the unnamed slabbing company graded strictly or conservatively and therefore should be believed?

I remember one time I was watching Pawn Stars and I want to say it was a Who record that got brought into the shop. Tucked into the sleeve of the record was the contract for the band to play at Woodstock. The Pawn Stars guys bought it on the spot without wasting time for an authenticator.
Turned out later that every copy of this album came with a copy of the same facsimile contract tucked into the sleeve. |
