Just wanted to see if anyone on the board had won the T206 lot at the auction in Carlisle, PA last Thursday. My father and I were going to bid, but I figured (correctly) that our offer was not going to get close to the closing price. Someone got a big ole stash of 235 T206's, 90% glued into a book, but looking at the backs of the ones that had come out, they might be in great shape.
It would have been a fun one to get, and see about extracting some of the cards, just didn't have the funds to get it. maybe next time. |

I know someone who was there and didn't pull the trigger. Went over 12k which seemed steep for the unknown soaking issues. The Cobb Polar Bear did look clean.

I agree, $12k seemed steep for potential issues. But what a collection!

I was there, started at 7k or so, 12800 I think they went for. I did take a close look at the pages and tried bending the paper away from the cards to see if I could determine what kind of glue was used and didn’t like how fast they were stuck. You can usually tell if animal glue was used and it didn’t feel like it to me.

What year was the book they were posted into? They sure have a lot of different wear patterns/damage.

you have a local auction in which card prices go wild. yet you always post about getting killed on your eBay auctions. see where I am going with this?

Interesting that a lot of the pages have 150, 350, 350-460 handwritten at the top.

Exactly, “prices tend to go wild at these auctions,”. So why don’t more people consign to these places? I’m being serious, not a wise guy.

LOL before I became an auctioneer I tired using live general auctions. Problem is they are WILDLY unpredictable. I saw a 1972 Topps Mays in Action in VG go for $30 at one auction so I consigned a bunch of similar material and don't know if I got $30 for everything. People remember the crazy sales but they forget about the time they emptied out a sale at a bargain price (which I've also done)

I had friends consign some stuff to a local dealer who did auctions, and for generic baseball books he was getting around $5 a book in small lots. The general antiques dealer who ran the above auction got $10 for a table full, maybe 50 books at a time. |
