I bought this home in 1995 and it has everything! Bathroom fixtures in both Avocado Green and Harvest Gold! Sunken living room too! But I've never really figured out what this is. I'm thinking it was an indoor planter of some sort that was filled in with cement?
What do you think it is? ![]() ![]()

It's a bench for people to sit on during parties and family gatherings, so they can eat finger foods and spill wine and beer on your carpet.

I think I agree with the space for plants. My parents have something similar near the front door that is obviously for displaying...and/or collecting miscellaneous items like jackets, purses, keys. But it about the same size as yours, just a little taller so it's not as convenient to use as a bench.

I'd call it a tripping hazard, for those late nite beer cravings in another room and you fail to turn on the lights.

I don't know what it is, but I think you are sitting too close to the fireplace.

Nice sharp corners, hard surface, and close to unmarked steps. Might want to check your homeowner's coverage limits.

Larry,
All of the above are incorrect. What is this? According to my estimates of length (9 ft) and width (3ft), what you have is a tobacco card display slab. The slab will accommodate slightly more than 1000 raw T cards without overlap. Conservation and/or alteration of the 1000+ cards is not needed. Alternatively some might argue that this is an early Topps display slab, designed especially for the 407 card 1952 Topps Set. I’m not sure but there may have been a contest in 1952 to award the slab.to the collector who submitted the most wrappers. I don’t believe shipping was included in the offer, but local pickup was offered as an option. Be sure to let us see what you choose to display.

I thought about filling in the "death trap tomb" but maybe I should go "deeper"?

Are you sure the house was constructed that way, or that something was once there and a wall was removed? Is there a basement?
