We are all amusedly familiar with this 1973 'Steve Garvey' card (he's in air quotes, because it is practically a Wes Parker card), where the real focus is Parker and his undoubtedly painful wedgie hogging the spotlight...
s-l1600-3.jpg Well, on ebay I ran across some other cards from other sports that share the ole Wes Parker treatment and they made me chuckle... Ignore the gargantuan linemen and look to the background towards the crowd. That head and foot waaaaay back there is Ray Guy... s-l1600.jpg And, I wonder if Jamaal Wilkes is muttering, "Hey, Wes, your last name is Unseld NOT Parker. Don't pull that crap on me!!!" Plus, I won't even mention the distraction of the basketball on its way to nowhere... s-l1600-2.jpg C'mon Topps, were these the best pics you had of these guys????!!!! Post others if you got 'em.

You have to look past Dave Hamilton to find Dave Nelson on his 1973 card. Hamilton did get his own card in 1973 and it appears that it might even be from the same game.

I noticed that with the Dave Hamilton card too. Topps loved to shoot multiple player cards during the same game/day. When the A's wore all white uniforms those were during Sunday afternoon home games. You can use the Baseball-Reference website to try to narrow down the actual day these photos were taken. I did this with another 1973 Topps card.

It’s almost as if Topps decided to play a guessing game in ‘73 by deliberately including multiple players in the shot on many cards. This one has always cracked me up; I think it wins the award for “player in most pain ever when featured on his baseball card.” If you’ve ever watched the Canadian documentary “King of the Hill” on Fergie Jenkins, there is footage of this actual play. Fergie was out, LOL.

I was listening to the Wax Ecstatic podcast about the '73 Topps set and he speculated that Topps wanted to commit to more action shots but just didn't have the photographic technology to make it happen. So they used a lot of wide angle shots or had their photographers out of place. Some of the shots came out really good, while others are a mess. Baby steps for Topps.
My brother told me about the King of Hill video on Youtube. What's so funny about the Corrales card is that if you watch the play on video, he isn't hurt; it's Jenkins that ended up injured and on the disabled list because of it. The card conveys a very different impression. |

73 topps is littered with cards like this. It’s a
major reason why I love the set. The candid shots add an organic feel to it. Bob Locker clearly got snubbed. They didn’t even leave him with his jersey number. Lol ![]()

Happens to the best of them too:
![]() They must've had a lazy photographer at the Raiders games in 1974 ![]()
